Some Lesser Known Facts About Zubeen Garg
- Zubeen Garg belonged to an Assamese Brahmin family and later adopted “Garg” as surname based on his gotra.
- He was named after the music composer and orchestra conductor Zubin Mehta.
- He spent his early childhood in Jorhat, Assam, as his father was frequently transferred due to his ACS job. He joined B. Borooah College to pursue a B.Sc. degree but dropped out to focus on music.
- He started singing at age three and learned music from his mother and tabla from Pandit Robin Banerjee for 11 years.
- Guru Ramani Rai taught him Assamese folk music, and he began composing songs during school days.
- In 1992, he won a gold medal for western solo singing at a youth festival, motivating him to start a professional career.
- He released his debut Assamese album Anamika in November 1992 and later albums like Xopunor Xur (1992) and Junaki Mon (1993).
- In 1995, he released his first Bihu album Ujan Piriti which was commercially successful before moving to Mumbai.
- In the mid-1990s, he shifted to Mumbai and recorded his first Hindi pop album Chandni Raat.
- Between 1995 and 2003, he recorded Hindi albums such as Chanda, Jalwa, Yuhi Kabhi, Jadoo, and Sparsh.
- He sang for Bollywood films including Gaddaar (1995), Dil Se (1998), Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (1998), Fiza (2000), and Kaante (2002).
- In the same year, he debuted in Bengali music with two songs in Mon. In 2004, he directed music for Shudhu Tumi and sang three songs in the film.
- In 2006, he sang “Ya Ali” in Gangster, which became his career breakthrough and won him GIFA Best Playback Singer award.
- He released his Hindi album Zindagi in 2007 and continued singing Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali songs until 2025.
- He also worked as music director for Assamese films like Hiya Diya Niya (2000), Mon Jaai (2008), Mission China (2017), and Kanchanjangha (2019).
- He acted in Assamese films like Mon Jaai, Gaane Ki Aane, Mission China, Kanchanjangha and Hindi films including Gangster and Big Brother.
- He directed Tumi Mur Mathu Mur (2000), Mission China (2017), and Kanchanjangha (2019) and produced several Assamese films.
- In February 2002, his sister Jonkie Borthakur died in a road accident, and he released the album Xixhu in her memory.
- In 2021, he offered his Guwahati house to be converted into a COVID Care Centre to meet the bed shortage.
- He was a football fan and played charity matches for flood relief.
- He was one of the leading non-political faces in Assam’s Anti-CAA protests. On 27 May 2024, he received an honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree from the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya.
- On 19 September 2025, he died in Singapore at age 52 after a scuba diving accident. He was given CPR and taken to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead at 2:30 pm IST.
- Government of Assam declared a three-day state mourning from 20 to 22 September 2025. His cremation site is located near Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati.
- Garg ran a charity Kalaguru Artiste Foundation, which worked and donated money for several various causes.
