Some Lesser Known Facts About Yashwant Sardeshpande

  • Yashwant Sardeshpande was drawn to theatre from a young age.
  • After graduating from Ninasam Theatre Institute in Heggodu, Yashwant established a repertory called ‘Guru Samsthe’ in Hubballi along with other fellow graduates. His wife, Malati, was part of the group.
  • His big break came with the comedy play ‘All The Best,’ which was adapted from a Marathi play. The play became a massive hit, with over 500 shows across Karnataka, India, and even abroad.
  • He went on to direct and act in many audience favourite plays, including ‘Rashichakra’ (his noted solo performance), ‘Neenaanaadre Naaneenenaa,’ ‘Sahi Ri Sahi,’ ‘Sahebaru Baruttare,’ and ‘Hingadre Dot Comedy.’

  • Over time, he directed and acted in more than 60 plays across Karnataka.
  • He also brought all of Kannada poet D.R. Bendre’s plays to the stage through theatre groups like Rangavarthula and Bendre Rangavalli.
  • Apart from theatrical productions, Yashwant worked in Kannada films and television series. He acted in films like ‘Marma’ (2002), ‘Amruthadhare’ (2005), and ‘Rama Shama Bhama’ (2005) (as A. Satyamurthy).

  • He appeared in various television series, such as ‘Yadva Tadva’ (2003) and ‘Bannada Buguri’ (2012).
  • He received widespread praise for writing dialogues in the North Karnataka dialect for the film ‘Rama Shama Bhama’ (2005).
  • Yashwant also produced and directed a comedy film titled ‘Idya Madyara’ (2009), but it did not succeed at the box office.

  • On 28 September 2025, Yashwant performed a play in Dharwad, Karnataka.
  • On 29 September 2025, after reaching Bengaluru, he suddenly felt severe chest pain and collapsed. He was immediately taken to Fortis Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 10 a.m. following cardiac arrest.
