Some Lesser Known Facts About Yash Dhull

• Yash Dhull is a right-handed batter who plays for India at the under-19 level. He has also represented Delhi at Under-16 and 19 tournaments.

  

• Yash Dhull was selected in a 20-member squad for the 2021 U19 Asia Cup where he was named as the captain of the side. On 19 December 2021, a team for the U19 World Cup team was announced where he was again named as the captain. On this occasion, a round cake shaped like a cricket field was cut at the Bal Bhavan International School’s academy ground in Dwarka where he was trained.

• He started playing cricket at the age of six when his mother saw the spark in him while he was doing shadow practice without the bat. It so happened that Yash saw boys elder than him playing cricket. He also urged them that he wanted to join them but they refused. His mother was watching the entire scene from the balcony. Then she took him to a Bal Bhawan cricket academy and enrolled him there. From thereon, his practice began.

  

• His father worked as the executive of a cosmetic brand in Delhi but had to give up his job to pursue his son’s passion for cricket. During an interview, he told,
  

  “I had to ensure he got the best kit and gear to play from an early age. I gave him the best of English willow bats. He didn’t have just one bat, I kept upgrading them. We had cut down on our expenses. My father was an army man. The pension that he received was used to run the household. Yash would always wonder how we were managing it.”

• When it was asked Yash about his role model, he replied,
  

  “Anyone who plays at the international level is good enough to learn from. I follow everyone’s game closely. I don’t copy anybody, but everyone is my hero.”

  

• His grandfather used to take him to cricket training and matches. He used to sit outside the academy waiting for him to complete the training. While he played matches, his grandfather used to watch him play the game. While sometimes, he performs poorly, his grandfather always used to encourage him.

  

• Since childhood, he wanted to become a medium-pace bowler but on the suggestion of his coach Pradeep Kochhar, he shifted to batting. He told about his coach that,
  

  “It was because of his guidance that I was able to become the captain of Team India in Under-19 due to better batting.”

• The first award he got was at the age of 11 in the Under-16 Rajesh Peter Memorial Tournament. It was the match where he scored 40 not out and earned a cash price of 500 INR. Recalling that time, he said,
  

  “I was much younger than the other boys, played in the top order, and at the end of the game received my first cash prize, Rs 500.”

• He scored unbeaten 185 runs against Punjab in the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy 2018-19 after which, he was promoted as the skipper. Under his captaincy, Delhi reached the knockouts stage after eight years. But there came a huge setback in his life when the COVID pandemic hit the entire nation and in just a few days he was to travel to National Cricket Academy. Yash said, ^[1]Indian Express Limited
  

  “My father put up practice nets on the terrace of the house. Everyone bowled to me, including my mother and sister. My family is really supportive.”

  

• He was the leading run-scorer in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy in the 2021-22 season held in September-October. where he scored 302 runs for the Delhi Districts & Cricket Association (DDCA) in the five games with an average of 75.50. Besides this, he has experience in leading Delhi’s U-16, U-19, and India ‘A’ U-19 sides.

• Talking about his capabilities, his coach Pradeep Kochar, a former First-Class player said,
  

  “What stood out immediately was Dhull’s ball sense. As the years progressed, Kochar noticed a quality that could not be taught. He didn’t let pressure affect him. He was sensible, calm, and controlled his emotions well. It is this nature that makes him special. Youngsters find it hard to handle the pressure of expectations these days. Yash is an exception.”

• On 5 February 2022, he led India to their record fifth U-19 Cricket World Cup title after beating England in the finals. ^[2]The Telegraph
