Some Lesser Known Facts About Vaibhav Suryavanshi

• Vaibhav Suryavanshi was born into a family with an agricultural background.

• He was inclined towards cricket from a very young age and used to play cricket with his friends with a plastic ball.

• When he was just 4 years old, his father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, observed him playing with a plastic ball and hitting the ball with sheer power.

  

• After observing his potential, his father initially began training Vaibhav after he came home from the field.

• Soon, his father made a small playing area in the backyard of his house, where he used to train Vaibhav. In an interview, while talking about it, Vaibhav said,
  

  I was inclined towards sports as a kid. My father is a farmer. He built a small play area for me. I used to practice there. There were some kids in my neighbourhood. My father used to call them and ask them to bowl at me. That’s how it began. He used to say ‘bat-ball khelega, cricketer banega na (you will play with bat and ball, become a cricketer, right)? He had confidence in me.”

• After training him at home for 4 to 5 years, his father took him to Samastipur town, where he got him enrolled in a cricket academy.

• At the academy, he was trained by coach Brijesh.

• As Samastipur lacked good infrastructure, his father often used to take him to Patna for practise.

• Soon, he gave Under-16 trials for the Vijay Merchant trophy and was kept on stand-by due to his age.

• After a few years, he began training under the former Ranji player Manish Ojha.

• At the age of 8, Vaibhav turned heads by excelling in the U-16 trials.

• He then took part in the Heman Trophy, an inter-district tournament, and emerged as Bihar’s top scorer. He scored 800 runs in 8 matches.

• He participated in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy when he was 12 years old. Scoring 393 runs from five matches at an average of 78.60 in the tournament, Vaibhav ended as the eighth-best run scorer.

• Further, he gave excellent performance in the Challengers Trophy (Under-19).

• In 2023, Vaibhav played for the India B U19 side in a Quadrangular Under-19 series and made notable contributions, scoring 53, 76, 41, 0, and 12.

  

• Impressing the selector with his consistent performance at the Under-23 camp, Vaibhav soon made a place for himself in the Ranji Trophy squad, becoming one of the youngest players in Indian history to debut in the Ranji Trophy. In an interview, while talking about it, Vaibhav said,
  

  Many seniors and teammates backed me because of my performance. My president Rakesh Tiwari sir helped me a lot and fulfilled my basic needs in cricket. He asked me to perform and get a place in the Ranji Trophy squad. I was really elated to see my name in the list.”

• He made his first-class debut for Bihar against Mumbai on 5 January 2024 at Patna.

  

• On 23 November 2024, Vaibhav made his T20 debut for Bihar against Rajasthan at Saurashtra.

• In 2024, Vaibhav was called for trial in Nagpur by Rajasthan Royals. In the trials, Rajasthan Royals batting coach Vikram Rathour gave him a situation in which he had to score 17 runs in an over. Apparently, Vaibhav hit three sixes in the over to overcome the situation. While talking about it in an interview, Vaibhav’s father said,
  

  Rajasthan Royals had called him for trials in Nagpur. Vikram Rathour sir (batting coach) gave a match situation where he had to score 17 in an over. Bituwa ne 3 chakka mara. Trials mein aat chakka aur char chauwaa mara (He smashed three sixes. At trials, he hit eight sixes and four fours).”

• During the 2025 Indian Premier League auctions in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Vaibhav was bagged by Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 1.10 crores. The bidding began at his base price of Rs. 30 lakhs.

• In an interview, Vaibhav’s father revealed that his family had to face many hardships to make Vaibhav reach at this level. He also said that he had to sell his farmland in Motipur to fund Vaibhav’s cricketing expenses. He said,
  

  It’s not just an investment—it’s everything. I sold my land, and even now, finances are tight. But this makes it all worth it.”

• Vaibhav is a huge fan of the West Indies cricketer Brian Lara and has a great collection of Lara’s playing videos with him. In an interview, while talking about his inspiration, Vaibhav said,
  

  My idol is Brian Lara. I watch his videos and batting style. I just love his 400 not-out innings. I have watched it several times. The best thing I like about him is that he doesn’t leave the match in between. He doesn’t give up. I have seen the match-winning attitude in him and this is the top-most thing I want to learn from him. I just love the way he used to take the match till the end and then win it. I want to dominate the bowlers the way Lara did.”

• In his IPL debut against the Lucknow Super Giants in April 2025, Vaibhav hit a six on the first ball from Shardul Thakur. He scored 34 runs off 20 balls with a strike rate of 170.00, hitting two fours and three sixes. After being stumped, he became emotional on the field and made history as the youngest player in the league to hit both a six and a four.

  

• In the same month, Vaibhav, at the age of 14, scored his first IPL century in just 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans. With this, he became the youngest batter to score a century in the IPL, breaking Manish Pandey‘s record set when he was 19. He also became the youngest player to score a century and a half-century in the T20 format. He also broke Yusuf Pathan‘s 2010 record of being the fastest Indian batter to score 100 runs in IPL and became the second fastest player in the world, after Chris Gayle, who scored a century in 30 balls in 2013, to score 100 runs in the IPL.

  

• Thereafter, CM of Bihar Nitish Kumar announced a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh for Vaibhav for his performance in the IPL.
