  • Udit Prakash Rai is a 2007-batch Indian Administrative Service Officer of the AGMUT cadre. Formerly, he held the position of CEO at the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). On 31 July 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs took the decision to suspend him from his position. The suspension came in response to allegations that he had directed the demolition of a 15th-century monument located in southeast Delhi to make way for a new government accommodation.
  • He grew up in a middle-class family in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Throughout his school days, he had a passion for studying Mathematics.

  • Upon completing his graduation, Udit began preparing for civil service examinations. In 2007, he successfully cleared the UPSC CSE and became an IAS Officer of the AGMUT cadre. He underwent rigorous training from 1 July 2007 to 3 September 2009 at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.
  • After completing his IAS training, Udit Prakash Rai took the role of an assistant commissioner at the Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department of Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 3 September 2009. He dutifully served in this capacity until 20 April 2012. During this time, he also took on the role of Deputy Commissioner for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

  • Following his tenure in Andaman & Nicobar, Udit was appointed as an additional director in the Education Department of Delhi.

  • Subsequently, on 29 January 2013, he took up the position of Deputy Commissioner for North East Delhi, where he served until 18 December 2014.
  • On 19 December 2014, he embarked on a central deputation, serving as an Officer on Special Duty to the Minister in the Mines Department. He remained on central deputation until 11 July 2016.
  • Later, he served as the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman from 15 March 2016 to 15 August 2019.
  • Following his service in South Andaman, he assumed the role of Managing Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare.
  • On 1 October 2019, he was assigned the additional responsibility of Special Commissioner of Trade Tax, a position he held until 27 February 2020. Shortly after, he was appointed as the special secretary in the Health & Family Welfare Department.

  • An inquiry was reportedly initiated against Udit Prakash regarding the appointment of his wife, Shilpi Rai, in a government-aided school during his tenure as the Director of the Education Department.
  • In the past, Udit was often perceived to have a close association with the AAP government and faced multiple criticisms and attacks from the BJP for the same.
  • In the year 2023, Udit Prakash Rai lodged a harassment complaint against Y VVJ Rajasekhar, the Special Secretary of the Vigilance Department in the Delhi Government. According to the complaint, Rajashekhar was notified in advance that he had to appear before the Vigilance Department in Delhi after taking leave from Mizoram due to an ongoing investigation against him. In the complaint letter, Udit Prakash Rai further expressed that he and his family were being harassed under the name of the investigation. He later forwarded copies of his complaint letter to the Chief Secretary, Chief Minister, LG, and Union Home Minister.
