• Sumitra Mahajan belongs to a Marathi family in Chiplun, Maharashtra.

• In 1982, she became politically active after she was elected as the Corporator in the Municipal Corporation of Indore.

• In 1990, she became a Member of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and was appointed as the President of the Mahila Morcha (Women Wing) of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

•  In 1991, she became a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee for Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Bill and the Parliamentary Consultative Committee under the Ministry of Communications.

• Sumitra Mahajan attended the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in September 1995.

• In 1995, she was appointed as the  Chairman of the Parliamentary Board of Madhya Pradesh.

• She served as the Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts in 1997.

• In 1998, she was appointed as the Convenor of the Sub-Committee on Drug Control and the Parliamentary Committee on Human Resource Development.

• From 2007 to 2009, she served as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice & Empowerment.

• In 2009, Sumitra Mahajan became the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development and a Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women.

• In 2014, she was appointed as the chairperson of various committees including the Business Advisory Committee, the Rules Committee, and the Standing Committee of All India Presiding Officers Conference, and the Executive Committee of CPA India Region.

• In the same year, she was also appointed as the president of the Indian Parliamentary Group and the India Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).

• She considers 18th-century queen Ahilyabai Holkar as her role model and published a book on Ahilyabai Holkar’s life titled ‘Matoshree.’ The book was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2017.
