Sumeet Sabharwal was a veteran Air India Pilot who was born and raised in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Sabharwal joined Air India in 1994.
He was the senior-most crew member on board the ill-fated Air India Flight AI 171 that crashed near Ahmedabad, India, on June 12, 2025.
Sumeet Sabharwal was among 241 passengers and crew killed in the plane crash in Ahmedabad. Ramesh Vishwaskumar was the only passenger to survive that crash.
He had 8,200 hours of flying experience in Air India.
Captain Sabharwal’s father is a retired official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
In an interview, Sumeet Sabharwal’s father mentioned that he was about to retire in the coming two or three months and had planned to spend more time at home with his ageing father.
Sumeet was never married in his life. He had been living in Jalvayu Vihar in Powai with his 90-year-old father.
Sabharwal has an older sister who lives in New Delhi. Her two sons have also taken up the same profession, and both are commercial pilots.
He was very reserved and disciplined in his life. Whenever he was flying, he asked his neighbour to care for his father.
