Some Lesser Known Facts About Subir Gokarn

• Subir Gokaran is considered one of the finest economists of India and has served at several prestigious economic institutions in India as well as in abroad.

• He served as an associate professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) in Mumbai from 1991 to 2000.

• At present, he is the Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund.

• Subir was appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by the Government of India on 19 November 2009. He became the youngest Deputy Governor of the RBI in its 76 years of history.

• His responsibilities as the RBI Deputy Governor included overseeing departments like the Monetary Policy Department, the Department of Statistics and Information Management, the Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, and the Credit Guarantee Corporation.

• His three-year term began on 24 November 2009, succeeding Rakesh Mohan, who had completed a six-month tenure before joining the Stanford Center for International Development at Stanford University in the USA.

• He also represented the Reserve Bank at the G-20 Deputies’ forum.

• Subir served as the RBI Deputy Governor till 31 December 2012. He later joined Brookings India, an independent think tank, as the Director of Research and a Senior Fellow.

• Before being appointed as the Deputy Governor of the RBI, Gokaran served as the Chief Economist for Standard and Poor’s (S&P) – Asia Pacific since August 2007. He also led CRISIL’s Research and Information business and was a board member of the State Bank of India.
