Some Lesser Known Facts About Sarath Babu

Sarath Babu was an Indian actor, who mostly worked in Tamil and Telugu films. He worked in more than 200 films in his career spanning over five decades. Sarath Babu rose to fame in 1977 with the Tamil film Pattina Pravesam. He was best known for his roles in the Tamil films Mullum Malarum (1978), Nenjathai Killathe (1980), and Annamalai (1992).

Sarath Babu desired to become a police officer since childhood. However, when he was in college, he developed a shortsightedness due to which he could not join the police service as a clear vision is a prerequisite for it.

Sarath’s father wanted him to join their hotel business, but Sarath had no interest in the family business.

During his college days, Sarath often received compliments for his good looks from his collegemates and lecturers and some of them even suggested him to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

Soon, Sarath joined his college’s theatre group and started taking part in plays.

Although his mother supported him in his career choice, Sarath’s father was against his decision to pursue acting as his career.

One day, Sarath came across an advertisement in a newspaper by a production company named Rama Vijetha which was in search of a fresh face for a Telugu film. Sarath responded to the advertisement and got through the auditions effortlessly.

In 1974, he featured in the Telugu film Rama Rajyam, and soon established himself as a versatile actor.

Soon, his on-screen presence gained recognition, and he went on to appear in the Telugu films Panthulamma (1977), Guppedu Manasu (1979), and Srungara Ramudu (1979).

Sarath garnered critical acclaim for his performance in films like Sagara Sangamam (1983), Swathimuthyam, Abhinandana (1988), Nomu, Yama Kinkaradu, and Amarjeevi.

Some of his popular Telugu films include Maro Charitra (1978), 47 Rojulu (1981), Magadheera (2009), and Criminal (1994). He also appeared in the film Vengamamba (2019) and Mutyam (1985).

In 1987, he appeared in the Telugu film Samsaram Oka Chadarangam in which he played a typical middle-class self-centred man in a joint family.

In 1988, Sarath Babu appeared in ten Telugu films including Abhinandana, Aanimuthyam, Jeevana Jyothi, Chattamtho Chadarangam, Prana Snehitulu, and Kanchana Seeta. In 2013, he appeared in the Telugu film Backbench Student.

The Tamil remake of Visu’s Samsaram Adhu Minsaram, put forth the subject in an entertaining narrative supported by Sowkar Janaki and Gollapudi Maruthi Rao.

Some of his popular Malayalam films include Dhanya (1981), Daisy (1988), Four First Nights (1990), Poonilamazha (1997), and Prashna Parihaara Shaala (2018).

His Kannada film credits include Ranachandi (1991), Amrutha Varshini (1996), Gaaya (1997), Hrudaya Hrudaya (1999), Neela (2001), Namyajamanru (2009), and Aryan (2014).

Besides films, Sarath Babu has also featured in a few popular TV serials including Narendhiranin Vinodha Vazhakku (1988; Doordarshan), Penn (1991; Doordarshan), and Ivala En Manaivi (1989; Doordarshan).

In 1981, Sarath Babu worked as a dubbing artist in the Tamil language film Nandu.

Sarath Babu was actively involved in social work and founded the ‘Bala Shiksha Foundation’ to provide free education to underprivileged children.

Sarath Babu had shared the screen with almost all popular heroes and heroines of his era in the Telugu and Tamil film industries.

He was very close to the Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. Sarath Babu worked with Rajinikanth in many popular Tamil films including Annaamalai (1992), Muthu (1995), and Velaikkaran (1987).

Sarath Babu was often addressed as the ‘Edison of the South’ for his versatility and talent.

Sarath Babu contracted Sepsis in March 2023 and was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. Later, he was traced with Myeloma which severely damaged his internal organs like kidneys, lungs, and liver. On 20 April 2023, Sarath Babu’s health deteriorated and he was rushed to AIG Hospital in Hyderabad, Telangana, where he was put on a ventilator.

In April 2023, there were rumours about Sarath’s death. However, Sarath’s family members refuted the rumours and said that Sarath was in a better condition and was recovering. While addressing the media, Sarath’s sister said,

All the news about Sarath Babu on social media are coming wrong. Sarath Babu has recovered a bit and the room has been shifted. I hope that he recovers completely soon and talks to the media. My request is don’t believe any news on social media.”

Sarath breathed his last on 22 May 2023 at AIG Hospital. He died due to multiple organ failure. After his death, the AIG Hospital in Hyderabad released a statement which read,

He was brought to AIG Hospitals on 20th April 2023 in critical condition with multiorgan failure because of multiple Myeloma. As an immunocompromised patient, he was under the care of a multidisciplinary team and was supported with a mechanical ventilator for his lungs, and dialysis support for kidneys among other therapies. He succumbed to his illness in spite of the best resuscitative measures. Our sincere condolences are with his family and fans.”

Sarath’s mortal remains were kept at Film Chamber, Hyderabad, for his friends and fans to pay their last tributes. His body was then taken to his home in Chennai. Sarath Babu was cremated on 23 May 2023 in Chennai.

Many South Indian actors shared their grief on Sarath’s death. Kamal Haasan, in a tweet, wrote,

A great actor and a great friend, Sarath Babu has passed away. The days of acting with him are a shadow in my mind. Introduced by my Guru (Balachander) in Tamil. He excelled in many timeless roles. Cinema has lost a good actor. My tribute to him.”
