• Ramesh Sippy was born to one of the most successful directors of the Hindi Film Industry “G.P. Sippy” on 23 January 1947.

• His father had produced the first film of his career “Sazaa” (1951) when Ramesh Sippy was just 6 years old. It was his first time when he visited a film set.

  

• He entered the film industry at the age of 9. “Shahenshah” (1953) was the first film of his career as a Child Artist. He played the role of Achala Sachdev’s son in the film.

• Before coming into filmmaking, he went to the London School of Economics to learn business. However, he couldn’t complete the course and returned to India within six months and joined his father in filmmaking.

• At the start of his career, he appeared as an actor in the films such as Bewaqoof (1960) and Bhai Behan (1969).

• Later, he worked in the direction and production departments for the films such as Johar-Mehmood in Goa (1965) and Mere Sanam (1965).

  

• After working as an Assistant Director for seven years, in 1971, he finally became the Director of the film “Andaz;” the film starred Hema Malini, Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor, Aruna Irani, and others.

• In 1972, he directed his second film “Seeta Aur Geeta;” starred Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Kamal Kapoor, Manorama, and others. This was the movie for which Hema Malini received the only Filmfare Best Actress Award of her career.
  

• In 1975, he directed “Sholay;” the film went on to become the iconic film of the Hindi Film Industry.
  

• In 1980, he released his another film “Shaan;” which was inspired by the James Bond films.

• In 1982, he did his next film “Shakti.” He was the person who brought two legendary actors Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar together for the first time on the big screen.

• Then, in 1985, he directed the film “Saagar.” This film was considered a comeback for Dimple Kapadia.

  

• In 1986, he also directed an Indian Television Series “Buniyaad;” which was aired on Doordarshan. This serial was based on the India’s Partition.

• His three successive films- “Bhrashtachar” (1989), “Akayla” (1991), and “Zamaana Deewana” (1995) were flops on the box office. Due to this, he didn’t direct any movie till 2015. However, he made a comeback in the Hindi Film Industry in 2003 as a Producer with the film “Kuch Naa Kaho;” which was directed by his son Rohan Sippy.

• In September 2014, almost after two decades, he announced his return as a Director with the film “Shimla Mirchi;” starring Hema Malini, Rajkummar Rao, Rakul Preet Singh, and Shakti Kapoor.

  

• During the release of the 3D version of his iconic film Sholay, he approached the Supreme Court for a stay on the film release. In an interview, he said that
  

  “My logic for taking the matter to court is very simple. No one asked me before converting my film to a new format. No one took me into confidence. There was no attempt to contact me. I read about it in the papers. I had no choice but to go to court.”
