Some Lesser Known Facts About Rajeev Pratap

  • Rajeev Pratap, a 36-year-old journalist from Uttarkashi and an IIMC alumnus, ran a digital news channel called Delhi Uttarakhand Live.
  • On 16 September 16, he uploaded reports on a district hospital and a school, after which his family said he received threats to remove them.

  • According to the written complaint later filed by his family, several people in the area held enmity against him, raising fears of harm.
  • On 18 September, around 8:30 pm, he left his home in Gyansu, Uttarkashi, driving an Alto car registered as UK07DX-4391.
  • Family members said he called them while travelling, said he was anxious and scared, and told them he wanted to return home.
  • Around 11 pm, he spoke to his wife, Muskan and again mentioned receiving threats after his reports were uploaded.
  • Her last message to him at 11:50 pm went undelivered, and his phone became unreachable afterwards. At 11:20 pm, CCTV footage captured him sitting alone in his Alto car near a bus stop, police later confirmed.
  • Family members searched through the night, including areas near Gangori, but could not locate him or contact him by phone. On September 19, his car was found in a mangled condition on the bank of the Bhagirathi River near Gangori by police.
  • The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) retrieved the vehicle from the river in the presence of family members. During inspection, one slipper was found inside the car, police said in an official statement.
  • Following this, the family lodged a missing person complaint at Uttarkashi Kotwali police station, mentioning threats and suspected abduction. An FIR was registered as Case No. 57/2025 under BNS Section 140(3), pertaining to abduction, based on the complaint.
  • On September 28, his body was recovered from the Joshiyara (Joshiada) Barrage in Uttarkashi district, police confirmed. The body was identified by his family, and a postmortem examination was conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
  • Deputy Superintendent of Police Janak Singh Panwar confirmed that the body was fished out after a ten-day search operation. Police stated that prima facie, the car had fallen into a gorge and was swept away due to a swollen river.
  • Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed condolences and directed a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances of his death.
