  • Prem Singh Tamang started working as a government teacher in Sikkim in 1990 after completing his graduation.
  • Three years after working as a teacher, he resigned from his job and started working as a social worker.
  • He later joined Pawan Chamling‘s party SDF and became MLA for the first time in 1994.
  • He later served as State Youth Convenor and Vice-President of SDF.
  • After serving as minister of various departments for Sikkim between 1994 and 2013, he formed his political party Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).
  • His fight with Chamling started due to the Rolu Picnic event conducted by Sikkim government employees on 21 December 2009 as the SDF government sent show-cause notices to the employees.
  • In 2019, he became the 6th Chief Minister of Sikkim after defeating Pawan Chamling who served as Sikkim CM for 25 years.
