  • As a child, he had been into sports like football and volleyball and represented his school in inter-school and inter-district tournaments. Apart from sports, he used to participate in dramas in school functions.
  • He was a leader since his childhood; as he was elected to head organizations in his school.
  • He began his career as a farmer and then became a government contractor and built a number of roads, buildings, bridges, and irrigation canals.
  • He established Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and became the Cheif Minister of Sikkim for the first time in 1994. Since then, the party has won the 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections.

  • In 2009, all 32 assembly seats were won by his party (Sikkim Democratic Front) in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.
  • In 2016, Sikkim was declared as the first and the only “Organic State” in the country by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, since the state fully implements organic farming and has banned all chemicals and fertilizers in farms.

  • In April 2018, he became the longest-serving Chief Minister (five consecutive terms) of India, after becoming the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the 5th time in 2014.

  • As he completed 25 years in office, he created history by breaking the record of Jyoti Basu (former communist ruler of West Bengal) who held office for 23 years.
