Some Lesser Known Facts About Nina Singh

• Nina Singh is a 1989-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Rajasthan cadre. She has held significant posts in different central government agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). She is also the first female IPS officer assigned to the Rajasthan cadre. In December 2023, she came into the limelight following the Government of India’s announcement of appointing her as the first woman Director General of the paramilitary force, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

• According to sources, Nina enrolled at the Delhi School of Economics to earn a master’s degree in philosophy; however, she dropped her studies mid-way after she got selected to report at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana, for police training.

• On 21 August 1989, Nina completed her training following which she was given the Manipur cadre. In Manipur police, Nina served in various districts at important posts.

  

• Nina Singh served in the Manipur police for a while before being transferred to the Rajasthan cadre after her marriage. She became the first woman IPS officer to be allotted the cadre.

• The Government of Rajasthan appointed her as the chief of the Rajasthan police in 1995. She became the first female IPS officer to lead the police. She served in the post till 1999.

• As the secretary of the Rajasthan State Women’s Commission, in 2000, Nina Singh launched an innovative outreach program. The initiative sought to assist women in tackling hard situations and arranged hearings across different districts, offering them a platform to express their issues.

• From 2013 to 2018, she served in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). There, Nina Singh worked on various well-known cases such as the Sheena Bora murder case, the PNB Scam case, the Nirav Modi case, and the Jiah Khan suicide case.

• Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in India, Nina Singh was transferred back to Rajasthan, where she was appointed as the Principal Secretary (Health).

  

• She worked with Nobel Prize winners Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo on two research papers focused on enhancing police effectiveness and implementing reforms within a system at Harvard. The Rajasthan Police was specifically mentioned in these papers as a case study.

  

• In December 2023, Nina Singh became the first-ever woman Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force, a post which she shall hold till her retirement on 31 July 2024. The CISF, in its statement, said,
