  • Manpreet Monica Singh is an American advocate, civil rights activist, and politician of Indian origin. She made headlines after becoming the first Sikh woman to be elected as a judge in the United States of America. [4]The Times of India
  • Manpreet Singh began practising law in the US after she completed her formal education.

  • She became a mediator after receiving certification in 2001.
  • The US District Court for the Southern District of Texas gave her certification for practising law in 2002. Later, she became a certified Court Ad Litem.
  • Manpreet Monica Singh joined a US-based Sikh rights activism group named The Sikh Coalition in 2011 and later became a member of the group’s Board of Directors. Manpreet has also worked as a member of the Board of Directors with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of the Texas, Rice University Boniuk Center, and Texas Lyceum.
  • She has worked as a teacher with the American Board of Trial Advocates, the University of Texas Law School, the State Bar of Texas, and the Harris County Judiciary and took Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes. Later, as a chapter representative, Manpreet worked with the American Board of Trial Advocates.
  • As an advocate, she has worked with the Texas Grievance Committee, the South Asian Chamber of Commerce, the South Asian Bar Association, and the American Board of Advocates as a Houston Chapter Representative.
  • In 2022, Manpreet became The Democrat Party’s candidate for contesting the general elections for Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4 for the position of Judge. In November 2022, the general elections were held. After filing her nominations, she said.

    I am excited and proud to announce my candidacy for Judge of the Harris County Civil County Court at Law No. 4. As a native Houstonian, it is my hope to represent my community that prizes diversity and servant leadership. It is an honour to be able to represent our community. I hope I have the blessing of all Sikhs around the world.”

    On 6 January 2023, she took the oath as Judge of Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4. Post-victory, in an interview, she said,

    Houston is a very different city. I will bring the perspective of being a first generation immigrant and a woman. I practice law so that part becomes fluid. It means a lot to me because I represent H-town (a nickname of Houston) the most, so for it to be us, I’m happy for it.”

  • As a social activist, Manpreet Monica Singh has participated in several campaigns organised by various civil rights groups working in the US.
  • Manpreet, in an interview, said that she contested the Judge’s election in Texas because of racism that takes place against people from other countries in the US. She also said that when her father shifted to the US from India, he was racially discriminated against. She further said that when she was working under a lawyer in the US, she was asked by her boss to not let anyone know of her ethnicity and should anyone ask about it, she should tell them that she is an American, while her parents are Indians. She said,

    I was always advised by my boss to tell that I am from America. He used to tell me to make people realize that my parents are from India and I am not.”
