Some Lesser Known Facts About Manish Tewari

  • In 1984, Manish’s father was killed by terrorists while he was on a morning walk in Sector 24, Chandigarh. According to him, the militants shot his father and also aimed at his mother but they ran out of bullets.
  • While pursuing his graduation at the DAV College, Chandigarh, Manish became a member of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and became its president in 1986. He remained in the position until 1993.
  • During his college days, he actively took part in various sports including swimming, tennis, and squash. He has played at the university and state levels. He captained the Chandigarh & Panjab University teams at various National and Inter Varsity Swimming & Water polo Championships.
  • During his time as the chief of the National Students Union of India in Mumbai, he met Naaznin B Shafa, a student leader from Mumbai, for the first time in 1989. Later, they became good friends and got married in 1996.
  • In 1992, he began his legal practice in the Supreme Court of India and the High Courts of Delhi as well as Punjab and Haryana.
  • In 1995, he founded the Indian law firm M/S Tewari and Associates and became its managing partner.
  • He has also served as the Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department of the Union of India in the High Court of Delhi.
  • In 1997, he was appointed as the Secretary of the All India Congress Committee and served for a year.
  • In 1998, he became the president of the Indian Youth Congress and remained till 2003.
  • He also served as an advisor of the Institutional Affairs at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

  • In 2011, he actively took part in drafting a private member’s bill to bring the spy agencies under parliamentary oversight.
  • Manish is an avid reader and is well-read on various subjects including History, Literature, Poetry, Military History, International Affairs, and Strategic Studies.
  • In 2014, he contested in the Lok Sabha Elections from the Ludhiana constituency; however, due to a heart ailment, he was admitted to a hospital and later was replaced by another politician Ravneet Singh Bittu.
  • In February 2021, he spoke at the Bridge India’s webinar on “India’s Foreign Policy: Taking Stock at the End of Year One.”
  • He is an author and authored four books including Decoding A Decade (2016), The Fables of Fractured Times (2018), and 10 Flashpoints, 20 Years National Security Situation (2021).
