• Umesh was drawn to theatre from very early on: at age 4 and he joined the theatre troupe led by K. Hirannaiah.

• Later, he became part of the troupe of legendary theatre-figure Gubbi Veeranna, where he honed his acting skills.

• It was in one such stage plays that the then assistant director Puttanna Kanagal noticed him and recommended his name to B. R. Panthulu’s next film.

• In 1976, he appeared in the film Katha Sangama, where his portrayal as Thimmarayi earned widespread acclaim.

  

• Some of his popular films includes Nagara Hole (1978), Guru Shishyaru (1981), Anupama (1981), Kaamana Billu (1983), Apoorva Sangama (1984), Shruthi Seridaaga (1987), Golmaal Radhakrishna (1990), Neenu Nakkare Haalu Sakkare (1993), and Venkata in Sankata (2007).

  

• He has acted in over 350 films in his career.

• His role as an old toothless widow grandmother in Ramesh Aravind’s directorial Venkata in Sankata (2007) was also widely appreciated.

• His popular comic role as Sithapathi in the film Golmaal Radhakrishna (1990) is often cited as one of the best comedy performances in Kannada cinema.
