Some Lesser Known Facts About Kane

Despite being from an American family, Glenn Jacobs was born in Spain as his father was deployed there while serving in the United States Air Force.

After some months, he and his family relocated to Missouri, the US, where he spent his childhood and did his schooling.

Kane was an avid basketball and football player in his college days. His interest in the sport arose when he started studying in high school.

Unlike dozens of other wrestlers, Kane did not drop out and completed his degree in English literature.

While studying at the university, Glenn developed a liking towards wrestling, owing to his height and build. In 1992, he began training with renowned wrestling coaches like Dean Malenko, Ray Candy, and Jeff Bradley.

After completing his formal education, Kane started working as a substitute teacher in St. Louis; however, he worked in the profession for some time and then left.

Thereafter, he wrestled in numerous wrestling events organised in places like Puerto Rico, Japan, and Florida.

He later joined the Memphis-based United States Wrestling Association (USWA). There, he appeared as gimmicks, Christmas Creature and Doomsday, which the audience did not like.

In December 1992, he faced off against then-USWA Champion Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler in a title vs. mask match, which Glenn lost.

Despite their rivalry, Lawler was impressed with Glenn’s agility despite his height. Due to this, he recommended Glenn to the WWF.

In 1993, Kane made an appearance in the Survivor Series as a member of Shawn Michaels’ team, The Black Knight. He later adopted the gimmick even while wrestling in independent circuits.

In early 1995, Glenn Jacobs joined Jim Cornette’s Smoky Mountain Wrestling in Tennessee, where he participated in numerous matches in the gimmick Unabomb. The name was partly inspired by the Unabomber, an American domestic terrorist.

He became the Smoky Mountain Tag Team Champion in April of the same year when he defeated The Rock and Roll Express in a Coal Miner’s Glove on a Pole Match. He had teamed up with “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert.

From February 1995 to August 1995, Glenn Jacobs wrestled in the WWF under the gimmick of Mike Unabomber, a derivation from his gimmick at SMW. He mostly participated in dark matches and won most of them.

His first fight with The Undertaker took place in August 1995 while The Undertaker was invited for a guest appearance at SMW. Glenn was defeated by him in the match.

Slowly and steadily, Kane climbed the ladder of success and eventually made it to the WWE (then WWF) in 1995. To show his departure from SMW to WWF, Unabomb lost the loser-leaves-town match.

At WWF, Kane initially adopted the gimmick of Dr. Isaac Yankem, Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler’s private dentist, whom the latter had hired to get rid of Bret “The Hitman” Hart. They both went one-on-one against one another for the first time at SummerSlam ’95 and again in a cage match in October 1995; Bret managed to pin Glenn both times.

In 1996, Glenn participated in “dark matches” as Dr. Isaac Yankem. However, he lost most of his matches and began making fewer appearances in the ring. His theme song, consisting of screaming people and the noise of tooth drilling machines, was also much disliked by the audience, and it failed to impress the audience.

However, the character did not gain much following, and Kane was given a new gimmick of a fake Diesel, originally played by Kevin Nash, after the latter left the company to join WWF’s rival promotion, WCW.

WWF believed that people would accept Glenn Jacobs in the role of Diesel. However, the gimmick did not last long due to a lack of following. Due to this, he returned to the USWA as The Doomsday and went on to win the USWA Southern Heavyweight title.

Before Glenn Jacobs was officially introduced as Kane, the storyline of him as The Undertaker’s half-brother unfolded gradually. Paul Bearer frequently pressured The Undertaker to join forces with him and Mankind, a WWF wrestler, threatening to expose The Undertaker’s “dark past” if he refused.

Initially, The Undertaker accepted the offer; however, he later broke his affiliation with them, following which Paul Bearer revealed The Undertaker’s dark secret that he had set the family’s house on fire, which resulted in the death of his parents and brother, Kane. However, since Kane was tough, he somehow survived the fire, but could not prevent his face from getting burned.

On 5 October 1997, Kane was introduced during the Badd Blood: In Your House event by Paul. He wore an intimidating mask and was no less than the Undertaker in terms of strength, height, and build. He also had long hair and wore a white eye lens to show a damaged eye.

During his introduction, Kane broke through the steel gate of the cage and forcefully entered the ring to confront The Undertaker while he was competing against Shawn Michaels in a steel cage match. Kane performed The Undertaker’s signature move, the Tombstone Piledriver, on him, which ultimately cost The Undertaker the match.

Thereafter, WWF created the “inferno match”, specifically designed for Kane. His character was further developed when commentators like Jim Ross used phrases such as “Through Hellfire and Brimstone.”

His first victory in an event came in November 1997 when he defeated Mankind in the Survivor Series.

Despite repeated provocation from Kane, The Undertaker refused to fight with Kane as he claimed that he had promised his parents he would never harm his own “flesh and blood.”

Thereafter, Kane and The Undertaker formed a partnership as Brothers of Destruction and participated in many matches together. However, the partnership broke when Kane interfered in The Undertaker’s match against Shawn Michaels, costing him his WWF Championship in January 1998. After the match, Kane locked The Undertaker in a casket and set it on fire. It is considered to be one of the most iconic events in the history of the WWF (now WWE).

A few months later, The Undertaker returned to the WWF and challenged Kane, following which the duo faced off at numerous events and even backstage.

In May 1998, Kane was challenged by Vader for a mask vs. mask match. This was the first time Kane was challenged for his mask. Kane went on to win the match.

On 1 June 1998, Kane challenged The Undertaker for the #1 WWF Championship title contender and defeated him.

In the same month, Kane faced Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Championship belt. Kane managed to win the match due to constant interference by Mankind and The Undertaker. His victory was short-lived as Kane was defeated by Austin during the title rematch on 29 June 1998.

In June of the same year, Kane and The Undertaker set aside their past rivalry and formed a tag team called the Brothers of Destruction. Mankind was later added to the team as a third member, and within a few months, the tag team won the WWF Tag Team Championship twice.

In September of the same year, Kane, The Undertaker, and Steve Austin were involved in a triple threat match with rules barring Kane and The Undertaker from pinning one another, so they both pinned Austin one time each to win a shot at his WWF Championship title.

Soon after, Kane and The Undertaker faced each other to become the #1 WWF Championship contender. However, they both were eliminated as Austin, who was in the ring as a special guest referee, counted a double pinfall and declared himself the winner. Out of frustration, The Undertaker attacked Kane, breaking their partnership and the tag team.

In December 1998, Kane interfered and attacked The Undertaker during the Buried Alive match between him and Steve Austin, due to which The Undertaker lost. This led to Kane being sent to a mental asylum by The Corporation, of which The Undertaker was a part. To stay out of the asylum, Kane joined The Corporation.

There, he allied with Chyna in her fight against Triple H, whom she had turned before becoming a member of The Corporation. Kane and The Undertaker would often interfere in Triple H’s matches, making him lose.

His stint with The Corporation did not last long, and on 28 March 1999, Kane was removed from the stable after Chyna turned on him on Vince McMahon’s orders. This was reportedly done to allow Triple H to become a member of the stable after leaving D-Generation X.

Soon after, he became friends with X Pac, who used to intervene and help Kane fight The Corporate whenever they tried to attack him in the ring or backstage. Initially, Kane rejected X Pac’s friendship, but later formed a tag team.

During his time with X Pac, Kane’s humanisation took place as he not only found a girlfriend, Tori, but also spoke in the ring for the first time with the help of an electrolarynx. Since X Pac was a member of the D-Generation X, Kane also got affiliated with the stable. His first word which he uttered with electrolarynx were the DX’s “suck it.”

With X Pac, Kane went on to hold the WWF Tag Team Championship belt twice. Their entrance was also merged, unlike other tag team partners who made separate entrances. In the ring, X Pac’s “jumping suck it” gesture was merged with Kane’s pyro stunt.

Kane and X Pac’s fallout started in early 2000, when X Pac turned on Kane after Triple H left The Corporate and rejoined DX. His girlfriend, Tori, also betrayed him by cheating on him with X Pac. Due to this, Kane developed a feud with the DX, which went on to become one of the most iconic rivalries of all time.

To make Kane’s character revert to how he was introduced in 1997, Kane was reunited with Paul Bearer, who started escorting him to his matches. Kane also started “terrorising” the members of the DX by intimidating them in the ring and backstage. According to sources, Kane was asked by WWF to perform one-handed chokeslams on the members of the DX, especially X-Pac. He once performed a tombstone piledriver on Tori, which resulted in her broken neck.

His fight with the DX and X-Pac ended in April 2000 when he managed to pin X-Pac and Road Dogg at WrestleMania.

Despite being shown as a heartless monster in the WWE, the organisation has, from time to time, shown glimpses of him being noble. In the early 2000s, a video was shot in which he helped a child win gifts from a claw machine by breaking its glass and handing the gifts and goodies to the child.

Thereafter, Kane returned to Raw and started fighting with the members of the McMahon-Helmsley Faction. He frequently started helping The Undertaker and the Rock in their matches against the McMahon-Helmsley Faction members.

During this period, he, at times, fought with The Undertaker; however, their past relationship did not become a hurdle until Kane turned on The Undertaker, attacking him, leading to a one-on-one match during which The Undertaker forcefully removed his mask leading to Kane fleeing from the ring by covering his burnt face.

On 1 April 2001, Kane faced Raven for the Hardcore Championship title and managed to defeat him. During this time, he allied with his half-brother once again.

In the same month, he was challenged by Rhyno for the championship title and was defeated.

Thereafter, the Brothers of Destruction started fighting with Edge and Christian, Rikishi and Haku, and The Two-Man Power Trip.

In May 2001, Triple H lost his Intercontinental Championship title to Kane. However, Kane lost his title to Albert in June of the same year after the unlawful intervention of Diamond Dallas Page, who was beaten by Kane and The Undertaker before for stalking The Undertaker’s wife, Sara.

His fight with Page ended on 19 August 2001, after Page was pinned by Kane at SummerSlam in a steel cage match. By the time of the match, Kane and The Undertaker had become WWF and WCW Tag Team Champions.

According to sources, a few years after Kane debuted in 1997, the WWF had signed a deal with him, according to which he was not allowed to appear publicly, especially in ads. However, this restriction was later relaxed, and Kane, in the mask, appeared in numerous ads.

In March 2002, WWF was separated into Raw and SmackDown! Kane became a part of Raw. There, he fought with the New World Order (nWo). By this time, Kane’s attire had been changed, and he spoke more fluently. His mask was changed, which showed a greater part of his lower face.

In the same year, a change in his behaviour and outlook was shown when he started attacking Lance Storm, Christian, William Reagle, and Test; they were part of the villainous anti-national stable named The Un-Americans. He also performed Booker T’s spin-a-roonie and called it a Kane-a-roonie.

Kane’s theme song was also changed. The Slow Chemical song by Finger Eleven became one of the most purchased and downloaded songs in WWE’s history.

In September 2002, Kane formed a team with The Hurricane and competed for the WWE Tag Team Championship against Lance and Christian from The Un-Americans. Kane won the match.

In the same month, Kane went on to challenge Chris Jericho for his Intercontinental Championship belt. Kane defeated Jericho, even though Kane was repeatedly attacked by Triple H and Ric Flair.

Thereafter, Kane was challenged by Triple H for his Tag Team belt, which Kane accepted. In October, a championship was scheduled; however, Kane was forced to fight by himself and without The Hurricane, as he had been attacked and wounded by Triple H and Ric moments before the beginning of the match. Kane went on to retain the title as he pinned Triple H despite repeated interferences from Triple H’s allies.

The match was later nominated as WWE’s 2002 “Match of the Year.”

Chris Jericho and Christian defeated Kane and his tag team partner to win the belt from them. Jericho and Christian were able to secure a win as Triple H and his allies constantly distracted the duo.

Later, Triple H’s feud with Kane intensified after he accused Kane of performing necrophilia (an act of intercourse with a dead being) on a woman named Katie Vick after she passed away in a car accident. To make matters worse, Triple H dressed as Kane with his stolen mask and circulated a video showcasing Kane performing unnatural acts on a mannequin, resembling a dead body.

Following Triple H’s stunt, The Hurricane and Kane released a video on the titantron in which someone dressed as Triple H was seen getting an enema (a process to clear constipation from the intestines).

This storyline between the two wrestlers became one of the most popular in WWE history. Despite its popularity, Vince McMahon was against this plot as it was “unethical.” However, Triple H managed to persuade him to allow the plot on television.

The storyline came to an end in October 2002 at the No Mercy PPV event in which Triple H and Kane put their Intercontinental and World Heavyweight titles on the line. Triple H managed to defeat Kane and became the first wrestler in Raw’s history to hold both titles at the same time. He won because of cheating and Ric Flair’s assistance.

Kane participated in his debut Elimination Chamber match in November 2002 for the World Heavyweight Championship. He was defeated by Shawn Michaels, who also won the title in the match.

Soon after, Kane and The Hurricane broke their partnership. Kane then formed a team with Rob Van Dam. The duo won their first Tag Team Championship title in March 2003.

Kane kept on wrestling with the mask on, leaving the fans dying to see the face playing the character. After around 5 years since Kane’s debut, the company started making storylines which revolved around his mask. Finally, the day came when Kane entered a match against Triple H with the stipulation that he would remove his mask if he lost. As expected, Kane lost the match and showed his supposed ‘half-burnt’ face to the world.

While talking about unmasking in a 2020 podcast, Kane told Austin that he was sceptical of it because his wife loved his long hair, and for unmasking, Kane had to shave his head in half. He revealed that the authorities had earlier decided to shave his complete head off; however, it was Bruce Prichard, a screenwriter, who suggested a half-head shave. He narrated the incident further and said,

We were just going to shave my head. And they get about halfway through, and Bruce [Prichard] goes, Stop! I need to show Vince, I should have said right then keep going, and of course in the heat of the moment I am like oh yeah, this is going to be awesome. I am sitting there like, wait a second, I got to go to like…Outback, with this, I got to pick my kids up at school.”

Due to the unmasking, Kane’s character went through a drastic change due to emotional instability. He began attacking wrestlers randomly by interfering in their matches. He even set WWE commentator Jim Ross on fire while he was backstage, interviewing Kane.

Thereafter, when Linda McMahon was in the ring, addressing the abrupt behaviour of Kane, Kane entered the arena and attacked her. He performed a tombstone piledriver on her, reportedly breaking her neck. This was used to further the storyline of a feud between Shane McMahon and Kane.

Kane and Shane went against one another in the Ambulance match and the last man standing match; Kane defeated Shane both times. The ambulance match is considered to be one of the most “barbaric” matches in the history of the WWE.

He has even acted in 2 WWE Studios’ movies, namely See No Evil and, of course, its sequel, See No Evil 2. He was also seen in a few episodes of the renowned TV Sitcom Smallville.

It is believed that Kane was chosen by the Undertaker as the ‘special one’ who would end his winning streak at WrestleMania. However, Kane, being indebted to Taker for all the fame, declined the offer.

After ending his relationship with Tori, Kane, for a long time did not date anyone for several years as per the storyline. However, after unmasking, a new storyline was developed, according to which Kane fell in love with Lita, and she rejected his advances numerous times. At that time, Lita was dating Matt Hardy.

In June 2004, Kane was chosen to participate in a 20-man battle royal for a World Heavyweight Championship match against Chris Benoit at Bad Blood; Kane won the shot at the title but was defeated by Benoit.

Matters between Kane, Lita, and Matt Hardy escalated in June 2004, when Lita claimed that she was expecting Matt’s child, whereas Kane claimed that it was his child and not Matt’s.

Thereafter, Kane allied with the then-WWE General Manager, Eric Bischoff, who tried to help Kane win the World Heavyweight Championship from Benoit by rearranging a match between them again. In the rematch, Kane was allowed to win by any means, whereas Benoit could only defend the title if he could make Kane submit; Benoit defeated Kane once again and retained the title.

In August 2004, Kane and Matt went against one another at the Till Death Do Us Part match, the winner of which would get to marry Lita and raise the child. Kane won the match and married her on 23 August 2004.

Lita suffered a miscarriage in September of the same year when Gene Snitsky attacked Kane during a match, due to which Kane fell on Lita’s stomach. Losing his unborn child caused Kane to lose his mental balance, and he began attacking male and female wrestlers during their matches.

In October 2005, Kane formed a tag team partnership with the Big Show. Their first tag team championship win was against Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch. The duo were also one of the few wrestlers from the Raw brand to be chosen for inter-brand promotion with SmackDown!

In May 2006, WWE started a storyline in which Kane started a feud with his lookalike, known as Imposter Kane. This character was portrayed by the wrestler Luke Gallows. Imposter Kane used to harass Kane during his matches, often attacking him. The storyline ended when Kane forcefully unmasked the Imposter Kane.

In October 2006, Kane was drafted into SmackDown!, where he sorted out his past differences with his half-brother, The Undertaker, and teamed up with him under the name Brothers of Destruction.

Soon after, Kane started a feud with Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP), who suffered first-degree burns on his back when Kane set it on fire during an inferno match.

After ending his feud with MVP, Kane started a fight with King Booker, which began in February 2007 when Booker attacked Kane while he was receiving the key to Houston as an honour. Later, Kane and Booker contested for the Money in the Bank; however, Kane lost the match due to The Great Khali’s interference.

Later, Kane was seen roaming backstage with a hook he called Jacob Goodnight. This was the same hook which he used in the See No Evil film series.

He was afterwards shown to have crushed his larynx as part of a WWE storyline to allow him to promote his film in Europe.

On 1 April 2007, Kane participated in WrestleMania 23 against The Great Khali. As a tribute to Hulk Hogan‘s body slam to André the Giant, Kane replicated the iconic scenario and bodyslammed Khali in the ring.

In May of the same year, Kane challenged MVP for the number one contender’s match for the United States Championship. However, he was defeated due to interference by William Reagle, the Boogeyman, and Dave Taylor. He then developed a feud with the three.

Kane then challenged Dave Bautista for the World Heavyweight Championship. They both went against one another in a fatal four-way match for securing the championship; Kane lost the match after Dave pinned him.

Soon after, Kane challenged Edge for his World Heavyweight title. Before the match, Kane confronted Edge backstage and attacked him, wounding him grievously, due to which the title was left vacant. Kane and Bautista fought for the title.

During their match, The Great Khali interfered, attacking Bautista, which led to the match being abandoned and both Kane and him being made #1 contenders for the title. The elimination from two to one #1 contender took place in a triple-threat match against Khali. Khali won the match by pinning Kane.

In October 2007, Kane was chosen by CM Punk, the then-ECW Champion, as his tag team partner in ECW in a three-on-two handicap match against John Morrison, The Miz, and Big Daddy V. Kane and Punk won the match.

In the same month, Kane was chosen to face MVP as a secret contender for MVP’s United States Championship; Kane won by disqualification as MVP left the ring and was counted out.

In March 2008, Kane won the ECW Championship title from Chavo Guerrero by pinning him in what later became a record for defeating a wrestler in the least amount of time to win a title. Chavo was pinned in just 11 seconds.

In a podcast, the Big Show claimed that Kane is one of the wrestlers who managed to lift him and slam him onto the ground. Kane also lifted Viscera, who weighed over 220 kg. In the podcast, Big Show shared an interesting incident about Kane that when he lifted him to body slam, he could hear Kane laugh through his mask.

In April 2008, Kane officially became part of the ECW brand and teamed up with CM Punk in an ECW Tag Team Championship match, Kane’s first in ECW. They, however, lost it to John Morrison and The Miz.

His stint in ECW was short-lived, as WWE was not gaining much from Kane’s transfer to the brand. Therefore, WWE drafted him into Raw in June of the same year. With this, the ECW Championship became exclusive to Raw as Kane was the then-holding champion.

From September to November 2008, Kane feuded with Rey Mysterio.

Rey once challenged Kane to a “fight for the mask” match, according to which Mysterio would remove the mask should he get defeated. However, Kane lost to Rey after he was disqualified from the match when he used a steel chair.

In 2009, he was drafted to SmackDown! brand, where he started a feud with his former ECW tag team partner, CM Punk.

In October of the same year, Kane was chosen to lead Team SmackDown! against Team Raw with Chris Jericho. The team went on to win the match.

Kane turned heel once again in October 2009, when he allied with The Undertaker against Chris Jericho, hence forming the broken alliance.

Many wrestlers have claimed that the thing they hated most about Kane’s attire was his leather glove and mask, which used to smell due to excess sweating in the ring. A wrestler, in an interview, recalled fighting Kane and said,

Kane’s gloves get pretty rank. He grabs you for a chokeslam and you just want to faint. It smells like rancid friggin’ yak meat. It’s the sweat, it builds up real quick. Kneepads, masks – they suggest you throw them in the freezer for a month (every so often), to kill all the bacteria.”

In 2010, Rey Mysterio lost the title to Kane, who defeated him after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract. Kane had secured this contract by defeating Jack Swagger in a Money in the Bank ladder match. Later that August, Rey challenged Kane for a rematch but was once again defeated.

With this, Kane became the first wrestler in WWE history to hold the WWE Championship, the ECW Championship, and the World Heavyweight Championship. He made history by becoming the fastest cash-in of a Money in the Bank contract, doing so in just 47 minutes after winning it.

His feud with Rey Mysterio increased more when Kane claimed that Rey had attacked The Undertaker backstage, due to which he was in a state of a coma. Rey, however, claimed that it was Kane who had attacked The Undertaker.

The Undertaker then challenged Kane for a shot at his World Heavyweight title; however, he was pinned by Kane, who was assisted by Druids in the match as they distracted The Undertaker when they brought a casket next to the ring with Paul Bearer in it.

Kane later turned on The Undertaker when Kane returned to WWE and claimed that Rey was correct, and it was Kane who had attacked him.

In October 2010, Kane then started a fight with Edge, who was chosen by the then-General Secretary of WWE as a “surprise” contestant to challenge Kane’s WWE Heavyweight title.

The matter between the two escalated further when Edge kidnapped Paul Bearer and tortured him backstage to psychologically damage him before their championship match. Kane won the match as both were disqualified, as they both pinned each other.

In April 2013, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon established The Authority, a faction that included members of The Shield, consisting of Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins, as its enforcers. Kane, known as Corporate Kane, served as the Director of Operations, while Randy Orton was selected as their handpicked WWE Champion.

Later, he and the Hardy Boyz went to the wrestlers’ court after the Hardy Boyz unknowingly took Kane’s first-class seat on a plane to a WWE event.

In the latter part of his career, Kane, like all other experienced wrestlers, has mainly played his role as a talent-enhancement, which means that he has put young guys over so that the younger talent could establish itself in the Wrestling Industry. His ‘sacrifices’ are corroborated by the fact that in 2014, Kane won only 8 matches while losing a mammoth 112 fixtures.

According to a popular wrestling database website, it is estimated that Jacobs has wrestled in 2500+ matches (including house shows, tapings, and PPV events) since his debut in 1995. No one in the WWE has achieved this feat yet.

Glenn Jacobs, as Kane, has changed his theme music numerous times, and all the music which he has used has been one of the best-selling songs created for the WWE.

Aside from wrestling, Kane runs an insurance agency, writes blogs and has profound interests in politics and public speaking. In 2017, Kane showed his interest in becoming the Mayor of Knox County, Tennessee.

On 2 August 2018, he was elected mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. He defeated Democrat Linda Haney, as he got 66% of the vote.

Apart from his political and wrestling advances, Glenn Jacobs is also involved in a lot of charity work. He often donates to charitable causes led by the Knoxville Public Safety Foundation.

Glenn Jacobs used to enjoy a game called Tommy Ball, where the hardcore legend Tommy Dreamer would stand in front of a wall while other superstars threw tennis balls at his family jewels.

Glenn Jacobs likes to consume alcohol occasionally.

Glenn likes India a lot, and he once revealed in an interview that he loves to spend his vacations there.

He is an avid dog lover and owns two pet dogs named Snickers and Oreo.
