• After completing an LLB degree, he started practising as a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court in 1981.

• In 1991, he ventured into politics by joining the Indian National Congress. He served as the chairman of the West Bengal Youth Congress till 1997.

• In 2004, he was recognised as one of the senior advocates of the Calcutta High Court.

  

• In October 2009, he visited the U.K. and the U.S.A. as a delegate of the Parliamentary Team of the United General Assembly.

• On 31 August 2009, he took charge as the chairman of the Standing Committee on Coal and Steel. He was also assigned the charge of various parliamentary committees such as the Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Committee on Privileges, the Joint Parliamentary Committee related to the allocation and pricing of telecom licences and spectrum, the Committee on Subordinate Legislation, the Committee on Ethics, and the Committee on Violation of Protocol Norms and Contemptuous Behavior of Government Officers with Members of Lok Sabha.

• He attended the CPA Global Seminar in Vienna, Austria, in October 2013 as the only representative of the CPA India Union. The seminar’s topic of discussion was the “Role of Parliaments and Extractive Industries.”

• During his second tenure as a member of parliament, he was assigned as a member of various parliamentary committees such as the House Committee, the Committee on Estimates, the Committee on Privileges, the Consultative Committee under the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Joint Committee on the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015, the Joint Committee on the Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws and Miscellaneous Provision (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and the Sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievance, Law & Justice.

• Kalyan Banerjee has been an advocate for various noteworthy cases such as the Rizwanur Rahman Case, the Nandigram Matter, the Chhota Angaria Case, the Bhikari Paswan Case, the Imposition of Sec-144 in Singur, and many land acquisition cases.
