  • After completing an LLB degree, he started practising as a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court in 1981.
  • In 1991, he ventured into politics by joining the Indian National Congress. He served as the chairman of the West Bengal Youth Congress till 1997.

  • In October 2009, he visited the U.K. and the U.S.A. as a delegate of the Parliamentary Team of the United General Assembly.
  • On 31 August 2009, he took charge as the chairman of the Standing Committee on Coal and Steel.
