• She belongs to a Bengali family in Kolkata.

• She started her career as a lawyer at Alipore Court in Kolkata, specializing in civil cases.

• In 2023, she joined SALSA (South Asian Legal Services Association) in Kolkata as a criminal lawyer.

• In June 2023, she shifted to Sealdah Court in Kolkata to continue her work in criminal defence cases.

• In 2024, Kabita Sarkar was appointed by the Sealdah court in Kolkata to defend Sanjoy Roy, the suspect in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case.

  

• According to sources, she was appointed after several lawyers refused to defend the suspect. She stated that she took up the case as she believed in justice through court trials and not pre-trial judgements. She wanted to ensure that the accused received a fair trial.

• She is against capital punishment and believes lifetime imprisonment is the maximum penalty. She also believes in allowing criminals to reflect on their crimes and stands by the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”

• Later, she claimed that the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case was one of the toughest cases in her 25 years of career. Her senior Sourav Banerjee assisted her in the case.

• The case involves the sexual assault and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor named Moumita Debnath at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August 2024. Sanjoy Roy, a hospital staff member, was accused of the crime after the investigators found a Bluetooth device near the victim’s body which belonged to him.

  

• Later, this incident caused national outrage and the CBI conducted a thorough investigation where they found disturbing details in the autopsy results.
