Jyoti Thakur became interested in kabaddi when she was three years old after watching her elder sisters play. She started playing while studying at a primary government school in her hometown.

Her physical education teachers, Mohan Lal and Rajesh Kumar, noticed her talent. She began playing kabaddi at the state level when she was four years old.

Later, she and her two elder sisters, Archana Thakur and Kavita Thakur, tried to get admission at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Dharamshala, but only Jyoti was selected.

She has participated in many school, college, district, state, and national level kabaddi championships.

In 2022, Jyoti Thakur participated in the Asian Games organised in Hangzhou, China, and won a gold medal.
