• During the visit, a neighbour named Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez came over and got into an argument with Joss and his husband. The situation quickly got worse when Alvarez shouted hateful comments about their sexuality and then shot Joss multiple times with a rifle.

  

• Jonathan Joss was found dead at the scene when emergency responders arrived. Alvarez was then arrested at the scene without any struggle, and he confessed to the shooting; his firearms were confiscated by the police.

• Alvarez was then charged with murder. However, he was later released on a $200,000 bond under conditions like house arrest and no firearms.

• During the investigation, police officials learned from neighbours that Joss and Alvarez had a long-standing feud, although it had never turned violent until the day of the shooting.

• It was also found that since January 2025, police had been called to the area 74 times for various incidents, including fires, thefts, reports of gunfire, mental health issues, and welfare checks.

• During the investigation, neighbours reported that Joss was often seen acting strangely and carrying weapons, including a pitchfork. However, his husband stated that at the time of the shooting, neither of them was armed.

• In an interview, Tristan said they faced many years of verbal abuse and threats, including threats to burn their home. He also mentioned that Alvarez had caused problems before, like on 8 June 2024, when Alvarez told police Joss had a crossbow, but officers found no weapon.

• Alvarez often reported Joss to the police for harassment, but said no action was taken. Joss said he only visited Alvarez’s house to talk about their dogs fighting and denied bothering him.
