• Joanne Whalley started acting at 13 in 1974, while still in school.

• In 1979, she was part of a music band called The Slowguns from Stockport, England. She quit the band before their singles were released later the same year.

• In 1982, she became the lead singer (Cindy) of the pop band Cindy and The Saffrons. Their cover version of the song Past, Present and Future by the Shangri-las was popular and was ranked 56th in the UK singles chart in early 1973. They disbanded soon thereafter.

• She studied drama and theatre at the Royal Court Theatre, London, between 1982 and 1986.

• In 1982, she began performing in several theatre productions, including Rita Sue, and Bob Too (1982) as Rita, Pink Floyd – The Wall (1982), and The Genius (1982) as Gilly Brown at the Royal Court Theatre, London.

• She met her ex-husband, late actor Val Kilmer, during the shoot of the fantasy children’s film Willow in 1987.
