  • G Venkataraman become an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in 1994 from the Tamil Nadu cadre.
  • On 27 June 2019, he was transferred on promotion as Additional Director General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing, Tamil Nadu Police.
  • On 17 June 2021, the Tamil Nadu Government created a new post of Officer on Special Duty in the Information Technology Department.
  • The post was created in the rank of Additional Director General of Police to expedite the implementation of e-governance at the State Secretariat. He was given additional charge of Officer on Special Duty, Information Technology Department.
  • At that time, he was serving as Additional Director General of Police and heading the Crime Wing of Tamil Nadu Police.

  • Earlier, as Inspector General of Police (Administration), he introduced paperless file movement in the DGP office through IT-based systems.
  • He also formed a specialised team of police officers with expertise in information technology applications to support digital initiatives.
  • On 1 September 2025, G. Venkataraman was appointed as Tamil Nadu’s new Director General of Police (DGP).
  • He replaced IPS Shankar Jiwal, who retired on 31 August 2025 after more than thirty-five years of police service.
  • Venkataraman earlier served as Director General of the Administrative Wing of the Tamil Nadu Police.
  • The Tamil Nadu Government confirmed his appointment as the 33rd Director General of Police and Head of Police Force of the state.
