  • In December 2014, Fazil did a research internship at the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi. He worked there till January 2015.
  • He worked as a sub-editor at Business Standard, New Delhi from May 2018 to November 2018.
  • From December 2018 to August 2020, he worked as a correspondent at CNN-News18.
  • He moved to New York for his further education in 2020.
  • After completing his education at Columbia Journalism School in 2021, he was selected as a post-graduate fellow for the school’s Global Migration Project.

  • In September 2021, he worked as an investigative fellow at Columbia University – Graduate School of Journalism, New York. He worked there till March 2022.
  • In September 2022, he started working as a data reporter at The Hechinger Report, New York, which focuses on innovation and inequality in education. He worked there until his death on 23 February 2024. He used to work on collecting and analyzing educational data. He also collaborated with fellow reporters to uncover disparities and explore advancements in education.

  • Fazil died on 23 February 2024 after a lithium-ion battery initiated the fire that resulted in Khan’s death and the injury of 17 others at a six-story apartment complex, St. Nicholas Place, located in Harlem.

  • On 25 February 2024, the Indian Embassy in New York offered assistance, stating they were in contact with the victim’s family and friends to help return his body to India.
  • The Hechinger Report took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their condolences and wrote,

    We learned Saturday that The Hechinger Report’s data reporter Fazil Khan died in a fire in the New York City building where he lived. We are devastated by the loss of such a great colleague and wonderful person, and our hearts go out to his family. He will be dearly missed.”
