She is a member of Indian National Congress and represents Raiganj constituency of West Bengal in the current Lok Sabha.

She has also been a television artist, costume designer and art director for television serials and short films.

In 1996, she married Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, an Indian National Congress politician 15 years her senior who was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1971. He was re-elected 5 times from West Bengal’s Rajganj constituency.

Deepa first forayed into politics in 2006 after winning the State Assembly polls from the Goalpokhar constituency of West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district. She was a member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2009.

After being elected to the Lok Sabha in May 2009, she was appointed as a Member of Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in August 2009.
