• He was born in a modest Bengali-Brahmin family.

• Debroy was a noted Indian Economist and had served in different capacities for the Government of India.

• He had lent his teaching services to renowned academic institutions such as Presidency College, Kolkata, Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, etc.

• He was also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore.

• Debroy had authored several books, popular articles, and papers.

• He had also served as the Consulting Editor of Indian Financial and other newspapers.

• From November 2004 to December 2009, he served as a member of the National Manufacturing Competitive Council.

• Debroy had also served as the Chairman of a Committee set up by Jharkhand’s Chief Minister to recommend a development plan for the State.

• In 2006, he published a translation of the Bhagavad Gita.

• In 2015, Debroy was awarded Padma Shri by Pranab Mukherjee (the then President of India). 

• On 25 September 2017, he was appointed the Chief of the newly set-up “Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).”

• In October 2024, he was admitted to AIIMS in New Delhi after complaining of several comorbidities. It was later revealed that he suffered from hypertension and diabetes.
