  • Bhajan Lal Sharma is an Indian politician. He became the 14th Chief Minister of Rajasthan on 15 December 2023, with Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa as deputies. He represents the Sanganer constituency in the 16th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • Sharma began his political journey with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during his school days through its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Later, he became the district co-convener and co-zila pramukh of ABVP in Bharatpur.
  • At the age of 27, Bhajan Lal Sharma joined the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and became the sarpanch of his native village. He served the position for two consecutive times. He then served as a Panchayat Samiti member of his native village.
  • In the 1990s, he served as the BJYM Bharatpur district president three times when J P Nadda, was the national president of BJYM.
  • After spending several years with BJYM, he was then chosen as Bharatpur district secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • In 1990, Sharma played a significant role in the 1990 ABVP protest where thousands of students from all over the country gathered in Jammu to march towards Srinagar to protest against the attacks on Kashmiri Pandits in the valley. He got arrested in Jammu’s Udhampur along with many other members.
  • In 1992, during the Ram Janmabhoomi agitation in Ayodhya, when the Babri Masjid was demolished, he actively participated in a protest led by the activists of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and allied organisations. He was arrested during the protest and sent to jail.
  • In the 2003 Assembly election, Sharma contested for the Nadbai Assembly constituency in Bharatpur on the ticket of Rajasthan Samajik Nyay Manch (RSNM). However, he attained fifth position and received over 5,900 votes or 6.28% of the total vote share.

  • Bhajan Lal Sharma later became the president of the BJP’s Bharatpur district unit and then the state vice-president of the party. He was then promoted to the position of state party general secretary in charge of headquarters. He held this role while also being elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party.

  • In 2023, Bhajan Lal Sharma worked as the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rajasthan, for the fourth consecutive term. He then contested the Assembly election from the Sanganer constituency in Jaipur in 2023 and defeated his Indian National Congress opponent Pushpendra Bhardwaj by more than 48,000 votes.
  • Reportedly, as a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), he is considered the longest-serving General Secretary in the Rajasthan Bharatiya Janata Party ministry.

  • Soon after Bhajan Lal Sharma was announced as the chief minister of Rajasthan, a video from his old campaign went viral on social media. At that time, Sharma was not widely known and had shared a video featuring ‘Singham’ music and portrayed himself as Singham (the fictional police officer Bajirao Singham). The video caught the attention of social media users after he became the 14th chief minister of Rajasthan in December 2023. Many social media users praised him and referred to him as Singham CM. Abhishek Singhvi, a Congress leader and advocate, shared Bhajan Lal’s video on one of his social media accounts. Singhvi captioned,

    Rajasthan’s new chief minister is too filmy! Hope he comes out of virtual world and face the realities of governing the state.”
