  • Anandkumar Velkumar grew up in Tamil Nadu, India.
  • He is an Indian inline speed skater.
  • Velkumar is practising skating at the age of 6. In an interview, his father mentioned that Velkumar has started practising skating on a badminton court.
  • His first coach was Ranna Raja, who trained him at the start of his journey. He later joined Sathya Speed Skating Academy (SSSA).
  • Anand’s elder sister, Subi Suvetha Velkumar, is also a national-level skater.
  • In an interview, Anand Velkumar mentioned that earlier he trained mostly on imperfect surfaces and on borrowed rinks, and did his training mostly early in the morning so that he could get more time for practice.
  • In 2021, Velkumar represented India at the Junior World Championship in the 15 km elimination event and became the first Indian to win a medal at any World Championship in speed skating.
  • On 2 October 2023, at the 2022 Asian Games, he was part of India’s bronze medal-winning men’s 3000 m relay team.

  • In August 2025, at the World Games in Chengdu, Velkumar made his mark by winning bronze in the 1000 m sprint. His achievement marked India’s first-ever medal in roller sports at the World Games.
  • On 15 September 2025, at the Speed World Championship, Beidaihe, Anandkumar Velkumar won a gold medal in the 1000 m sprint with a timing of 1:24.924. He created history and became the first Indian to win a gold medal in skating in any World Championship.
