  • Anand Mohan Singh is an Indian politician who was jailed in 2007 after being convicted of the murder of G. Krishnaiah. Anand has served in the Bihar Vidhan Sabha as an MLA and in the Parliament of India as an MP. He was set free on 27 April 2023 after the Bihar government tweaked the rules in the Bihar Police Jail Manuals 2012 and notified the authorities for the release of 27 prisoners, including Anand.
  • Anand was born into a Bihari farmer family belonging to the middle-income group.
  • Anand worked as an editor of Kranti Doot, a magazine, in 1972.
  • Anand Mohan quit his graduation in 1974 to participate in the Sampoorna Kranti (Total Revolution) led by the activist Jayaprakash Narayan, also known as JP Narayan, against the declaration of emergency in 1975 by the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi.
  • In 1975, Anand was imprisoned by the law enforcement authorities under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). He remained in prison till the end of the emergency, i.e., till 1977.
  • He became known as a strongman in Bihar, especially in the Saharsa-Supaul belt, after he led a black flag match against Morarji Desai, the then Prime Minister of India, when he visited Bihar in the late 1970s.
  • His power as a Bahubali in Bihar continued to increase in the 1980s. He, along with his gang, began undertaking criminal activities in the state such as extorting money from politicians as well as businessmen, which resulted in the Bihar law enforcement agencies registering numerous cases against him. In 1983, he approached the court of law and surrendered himself to the authorities following which he was imprisoned for three months. Despite being imprisoned, he continued to further his nefarious activities by managing the functioning of his gang from behind bars.

  • Anand established the Samajwadi Krantikari Sena in 1980.
  • Anand was elected to the Vidhan Sabha in 1990 after receiving 97,032 votes.

  • Anand quit Janata Dal (JD) in 1993 after the party supported putting into effect the recommendations made by the Mandal Commission, which led to a difference of opinion between Anand and the senior party leadership as a result of which the differences between them increased.

  • Anand entered the parliament as a member for the first time in 1996 after he won the general elections by receiving 3,34,994 votes. As per several sources, he contested and won the elections while imprisoned.

  • He was not elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999 as he was defeated by 2,535 votes by a Janata Dal candidate named Md Anwarul Haque.
  • From 2007 to 2023, Anand Mohan, while lodged in jail, published three books, Qaid Mein Azad Kalam (Pen is Free in Captivity), Gandhi (Cactus Ke Phool), and Swadhin Abhivyakti (Free Expressions). He also penned a chapter titled Parvat Purush – Dashrath, a part of an anthology titled Madhurika. The chapter was taught to the students of Class VIII studying in the CBSE schools.

  • After the Bhagalpur Central Jail authorities separated Anand Mohan Singh, Akhlaq Ahmed, and Arun Kumar, all on death row for murdering G. Krishnaiah, Anand Mohan went on indefinite fasting. Anand also accused the jail authorities of mistreating him by forcing him to sleep on the floor and feeding him poorly cooked food. Responding to the allegations, a seniors jail authority said,

    As per the jail manual, a convict sentenced to death had to sleep on the ground. The convict was only provided with two blankets and was given a simple food.”
