Some Lesser Known Facts About Aman Arora

  • Aman Arora is an Indian politician and member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He was elected as the MLA from Sunam in 2017 and 2022. Arora also serves as the co-president of the Punjab state unit of AAP. Before joining AAP in 2016, he was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) and unsuccessfully contested the Sunam assembly seat in 2007 and 2012.
  • Growing up, Arora watched his politician father, Bhagwan Das Arora, working for the betterment of the people of Sunam and Punjab which intrigued him to venture into politics. To enhance community services, Bhagwan Das Arora established a dental college and hospital in 1996 through a charitable trust, which drew proceeds from his family business.
  • Bhagwan Das Arora was a member of the INC. He was twice elected as a MLA from Sunam, in 1992 and 1997. Tragically, on 3 July 2000, he reportedly took his own life by shooting himself in the head on the second floor of his ancestral house in Sunam. According to family members, Arora had happily gone to bed at night. However, when he didn’t wake up the next morning, a domestic servant tried to get his attention by knocking on the door repeatedly, but there was no response. Consequently, they broke open the door and discovered Bhagwan Das’ lifeless body.   • After Bhagwan Das Arora’s demise, his wife, Parmeshwari Devi, contested the Sunam seat in a September 2000 by-election, but she lost it.
  • Aman Arora’s elder brother, Kamaldeep Arora alias Bobby, was accused of kidnapping a shopkeeper along with his gunmen Harpal Singh and Joginder Singh in March 1996. The gunmen were arrested and the case went to court. Kamaldeep Arora died in England in 2019. [8]Chandigarh Tribune
  • Aman’s sister Sonia Arora is married to the politician Rajinder Deepa. Sonia contested the 2002 assembly election from Sunam on a Congress ticket, but she lost to Parminder Dhindsa.
  • He joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in January 2016 after being influenced by Arvind Kejriwal’s politics for the welfare of the common man.
  • On 10 May 2017, when MP from Sangrur Bhagwant Mann, was appointed as the Chief of the AAP’s Punjab unit, Aman Arora was appointed as the co-convener. He held this position until 17 March 2018. The party spokesperson said that while Mann, as the state convener, would oversee all party matters, Arora’s focus would be specifically on developing the party’s structure within the state.
  • In 2018, Bhagwant Mann resigned from AAP in protest against party convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s apology to SAD minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia in a defamation case filed by Majithia against Kejriwal. Kejriwal had made allegations about Majithia’s involvement in the drug trade. During this time, the Leader of Opposition in Punjab Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Aman Arora also submitted their resignations from their positions. However, the party did not accept their resignations.

  • In 2022, Arora was re-elected as the MLA from Sunam with an impressive margin of 75,277 votes, defeating the INC candidate Jaswinder Singh Dhiman. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party gained a 79% majority in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election, securing 92 out of 117 seats. Bhagwant Mann was subsequently sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Punjab. In July 2022, Mann expanded his council of ministers by including five legislators in his cabinet, which included Aman Arora representing the Sunam constituency, Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar from Amritsar (south), Fauja Singh Sarari from the Guru Har Sahai seat, Chetan Singh Jauramajra from Samana, and Anmol Gagan Mann, MLA from Kharar. Arora assumed responsibility for the portfolios of Information & Public Relations, New and Renewable Energy Sources, and Housing and Urban Development.
