She sang her first song Mundo De Juguetes on a local television show called Pipo.
Alicia Villarreal’s first professional singing job was at a church, where she raised money for charity.

In 1995, she became the lead singer of Grupo Límite, which toured with the well-known band Grupo Bronco. Some of the popular songs of the group included Acaríciame, Te Aprovechas, and Solo Contigo.
Grupo Límite released six albums including a live one recorded in Mexico City.
In 2001, Alicia Villarreal released her first music album Soy Lo Prohibido in the ranchera music style. The album included the hit song Te Quedó Grande la Yegua.

After the success of the album, she felt unsure about what direction to take in her music career because she had changed music styles.
In 2004, Alicia Villarreal left her band and released her second music album Cuando el Corazón se Cruza, which was produced by her husband, Cruz Martínez. They co-wrote several songs together. The album won several awards.
In 2006, she sang Si Una Vez during the Selena Vive tribute show.

After that, Alicia Villarreal released the song Si Una Vez with two new songs titled Punalada Trapera and Ya No Hay Amor on a special version of the album Cuando El Corazón Se Cruza.
This special edition of the album was a dual disc that included five remixes of her older songs and a collection of her music videos. The dual disc was released in Mexico in 2005.
In 2006, Alicia Villarreal released her third music album Orgullo De Mujer.

The main song from the album, Insensible a Ti, was used as the theme song for the television show Duelo de Pasiones in which she appeared as Raquel.
After that, Orgullo De Mujer was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album.
Alicia Villarreal remained away from music for four years.
She then released her fourth album La Jefa, which was released on 23 June 2009. The lead song from the album was Caso Perdido.
The album, La Jefa, debuted at number one on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart and number four on the Latin Albums chart.

On 10 October 2009, her brother José Víctor Villarreal Esparza died in a car accident in Monterrey, Mexico. He was 36 years old.
In February 2025, Alicia Villarreal went viral for making the domestic violence hand signal (Signal for Help) during a concert in Michoacán, Mexico.
After that, she filed a complaint in Monterrey against her husband Martínez for alleged domestic violence.
