  • Zubeen Garg belonged to an Assamese Brahmin family and later adopted “Garg” as surname based on his gotra.
  • He was named after the music composer and orchestra conductor Zubin Mehta.
  • He spent his early childhood in Jorhat, Assam, as his father was frequently transferred due to his ACS job. He joined B. Borooah College to pursue a B.Sc. degree but dropped out to focus on music.
  • He started singing at age three and learned music from his mother and tabla from Pandit Robin Banerjee for 11 years.
  • Guru Ramani Rai taught him Assamese folk music, and he began composing songs during school days.
  • In 1992, he won a gold medal for western solo singing at a youth festival, motivating him to start a professional career.
  • He released his debut Assamese album Anamika in November 1992 and later albums like Xopunor Xur (1992) and Junaki Mon (1993).
  • In 1995, he released his first Bihu album Ujan Piriti which was commercially successful before moving to Mumbai.
