Some Lesser Known Facts About Amit Agrawal

  • Amit Agrawal is a 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, who has held numerous significant positions at both the central and state levels, including in the states of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. On 20 June 2023, he was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer at the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
  • He grew up in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Following his success in the UPSC examination, he underwent training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration located in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand.
  • Amit Agrawal embarked on his professional journey as an Assistant Collector in the General Administration Department on 22 June 1994. After serving in this capacity until 1 January 1996, he was promoted to the role of Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) within the same department in Gwalior. Following a brief tenure, he was relocated to Jhabua where he served for approximately one year.
  • From 23 June 1997 to 25 September 2000, Amit took on the crucial role of Chief Executive Officer at the District Panchayat in Dhar, within the Panchayat & Rural Development Department. Subsequently, he assumed the position of Mission Director at the Rural Development Department in Bhopal. During his tenure, he played a key role in leading the Watershed Mission and worked tirelessly to achieve its objectives.
  • Afterwards, Amit held the positions of Deputy Secretary in the General Administration Department and the Information Technology Department in Raipur. Following this, he served as the District Collector in the General Administration Department in Mahasamund from 1 July 2001 to 27 June 2002.
  • He then took on the role of Joint Secretary in the Technical Education & Manpower Planning Department in Raipur for approximately eight months.
  • Subsequently, Amit assumed various high-ranking positions within the government of Chhattisgarh. This included serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Information Technology Department and the Bio-Technology Department in Raipur, as well as holding the role of Joint Secretary in both departments. He also served as Joint Secretary in the Finance Department and later took on the responsibilities of Managing Director and OSD in the same department.
  • On 8 July 2004, he embarked on a central deputation and joined the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Delhi as Deputy Secretary. After dedicating approximately three years to this position, he was appointed as the Director of the PMO. During his time in Delhi, he also served as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister from 6 January 2012 to 27 November 2012.
  • On 6 September 2013, Amit was appointed as the Secretary of the Technical Education Department in Raipur. Later, he served as the Commissioner of the Commercial Taxes Department in Raipur and held the position of Secretary in both the Finance and Commercial Taxes Departments in Raipur.
  • Starting on 26 December 2016, Amit Agrawal began his second central deputation, taking on the role of Joint Secretary of Finance in New Delhi. He devoted approximately four years to this position.

  • Following his tenure, Agrawal served as the Additional Secretary of Finance. Later, he assumed the position of Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) from 23 May 2022 to 11 June 2023.
  • Agrawal’s expertise in the field of IT and e-governance is widely acknowledged. Throughout his tenure, he played a crucial role in driving innovation initiatives and actively participated in the development of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill. This significant legislation is anticipated to undergo parliamentary deliberation in 2023.

  • In a notable bureaucratic reshuffle by the Narendra Modi government, Agrawal was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on 20 June 2023. He succeeded Saurabh Garg in this position. As per the Personnel Ministry order, Agrawal assumed the rank and remuneration of an Additional Secretary to the Government of India.
  • Additionally, alongside his responsibilities at UIDAI, Agrawal also holds the position of Chairman of the National Digital Communications Policy Committee. Furthermore, he serves as the non-executive Chairperson of National Informatics Centre Services Incorporated and holds directorship on the Boards of the National Institute of Smart Government and the Data Security Council of India.
