Hema pursued her education up until class seven and then dropped out of school and pursued acting full-time.

She has appeared in more than 250 films during her acting career including Jayammu Nischayammu Raa (1989), Tata Birla Madhyalo Laila (2006), and Pilla Nuvvu Leni Jeevitham (2014).

In 2016, she appeared in the Hindi language film Tutak Tutak Tutiya, starring Sonu Sood, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Prabhu Deva. In the film, she played the role of Devi’s (Tamannaah Bhatia’s character) mother.
