She was born in the Chennai district of Tamil Nadu in India and raised in Singapore and Indonesia.

At the age of 16 in 1982, she came to the United States to attend college.

In 2000, she became a U.S. citizen.

In March 2000, her book- Pilgrimage: One Woman’s Return to a Changing India was published.

After the 9/11 attacks in 2001, she founded Hate Free Zone as an advocacy group for Muslim, Arab and South Asian Americans. The Group’s name was changed to OneAmerica in 2008.

In 2013, the White House recognized her as “Champion of Change” for her noble work on behalf of the community of immigrants.

In April 1995, she returned to India after a gap of 25 years and in an interview she revealed that her life was transformed after she spent some time in India.

On 9 November 2016, she became the first Indian-American woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
