He was born to Parkash Singh Badal and Surinder Kaur in the Faridkot district of Punjab.

His father, Parkash Singh Badal, is a veteran politician of Punjab and has served 5 times as the Chief Minister of Punjab.

He entered politics in 1996 and was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from the Faridkot constituency.

In 2013, he envisioned the ‘Progressive Punjab Investors Summit’ to promote a favourable environment for investors in Punjab.

In December 2024, Badal made news when the Akal Takht ordered Sukhbir to perform cleaning duties in the kitchen and washroom of a gurdwara for supporting the riots led by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan.

On 4 December 2024, while Badal had visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar to serve his punishment sentence, a man named Narayan Singh Chaura opened fire on him. Badal escaped without injuries.
