Balraj’s father passed away when he was 10 years old.
Balraj’s mother raised him and his four siblings through various means, including selling milk, picking vegetables, and working at a construction site and garment factory.
To support his family financially, Balraj decided to join the Indian Army.
During his time in the military, Balraj was picked for rowing because he was 6 feet tall. He impressively won the battalion regatta on his very first attempt.
During the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualification Rowing Competition in Chungju, South Korea, Balraj secured a spot in the Paris Olympics 2024. He led the 2 km race for the first 1600 meters but lost time in the last 500 meters. However, his early lead was crucial in helping him qualify for the Olympics.

Balraj Panwar was the solitary entry in rowing at the Paris Olympics 2024 from India.
Balraj was part of the first batch of athletes who flew to Paris 20 days ahead of the competition to acclimatise to the weather and other conditions there. In Paris he trained with Indian doubles sculls rower Salman Khan.
While preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Balraj also attendd psychology classes twice a week in order to train his mental strength with his physical strength.
