  • While he was in college, he became active in students politics and joined the Janta Vidyarthi Morcha.
  • In 1980, he was appointed as the secretary of Janta Vidyarthi Morcha.
  • After serving the position for three years, Vijender became the Joint Convener of Janta Vidyarthi Morcha.
  • He served as the Vice President of Students’ Union at the University of Delhi from 1984 to 1985.
  • In 1993, his determined fight against the lottery resulted in its ban in Delhi.
  • In 1997, he contested the Municipal Corporation Elections in Delhi and was elected as a Councilor.

  • As a member of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Rohini, Vijender freed the residents of Rohini from the fear of the mafia that controlled the car parks.
  • During his tenure, he developed Rohini as a model municipal unit by implementing several socio-economic projects, such as building a Panchkarma Hospital, a modern MCD swimming pool, a six-lane bridge, new schools, a railway reservation counter, ten community centers, a library, a women’s hostel, and an auditorium and cultural centre.
  • In 2013, Vijender contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly election from New Delhi but lost to Aam Aadmi Party candidate Arvind Kejriwal by a margin of 21,583 votes.

  • In 2015, he contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections from Rohini. Vijender defeated the Aam Aadmi Party candidate C. L. Gupta by 5,367 votes, being one of the three BJP candidates to pull a win in the elections.
  • In the same year, the AAP leaders threw him out of the Delhi Legislative Assembly after OP Sharma, a member of the BJP, made inappropriate remarks against AAP leader Alka Lamba.

  • In 2020, Gupta defeated Aam Aadmi Party Candidate Rajesh Nama ‘Bansiwala’ from Rohini constituency by a margin of more than 12,000 votes.
  • Vijender won the 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly Elections from Rohini, defeating AAP candidate Pardeep Mittal by a margin of more than 37000 votes. The margin was highest among all 48 BJP candidates who had won the election.

  • As the President of the Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh, he opposed the commercialization of education. His move was supported by the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India. As a result, children from economically disadvantaged families were given seats in schools across the city.
  • He also took steps to protect the traders from the unjust sealing drive, protecting the livelihoods of thousands of families.
  • He has served as a member of the Bench of Magistrates in the Child Welfare Committee of Delhi.
