Some Lesser Known Facts About Kul Man Ghising

• Kul Man Ghising was born in a middle-class family in Nepal.

• During his teenage years, he moved to Kathmandu for further studies. He studied at Balsewa Secondary School from class seven

• He received a scholarship to study electrical engineering at Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, India.

• Kul Man Ghising joined the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in 1994 and worked there for over two decades.

• He served as managing director of Chilime Hydropower Company and later as project chief of the Rahughat Hydroelectricity Project.

• On 14 September 2016, he was appointed managing director of NEA by a cabinet decision.

• At the time, Nepal was facing power cuts of up to 18 hours daily during the dry seasons. He stopped the policy of uninterrupted power supply to a few industries and distributed power more fairly to all sectors.

• He restarted inactive power plants, stored water during low-demand hours, and encouraged people to avoid using high-power devices during peak hours.

  

• Within months, major cities had uninterrupted power, and load-shedding was eliminated nationwide by May 2018. Ghising made NEA profitable and became widely respected for ending the country’s power crisis.

• On 16 September 2020, his first tenure ended, and he was replaced by Lekhnath Koirala as acting chief. He was reappointed as managing director of NEA on 11 August 2021 for a second term.

  

• His tenure was scheduled to end on 9 August 2025. On 24 March 2025, the government removed him from his post four months before term completion.

• The decision led to protests and criticism from opposition parties and civil society. On 11 September 2025, after KP Sharma Oli resigned as Prime Minister, Ghising’s name emerged for interim leadership.

• A Gen Z protest group proposed Kul Man Ghising as interim Prime Minister, along with other names like Sushila Karki and Balendra Shah.

• Reports stated that Ghising was seen as a popular choice due to his clean image and problem-solving track record. He is considered a frontrunner for the post, but his entry into politics has not been confirmed.
