- He initially started working as an assistant director on several notable films, including Purab Aur Pachhim (1971), Shor (1972), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), and Yaadgaar (1984).
- Chandra Barot made his mark in Indian cinema by directing the 1978 cult classic Don.
