Marius’s maternal grandfather, Sven O. Høiby, had a criminal record. He struggled with alcohol and was married to a stripper (an exotic dancer).
Mette-Marit and John Ognby lived together in a government-provided apartment in a poor neighbourhood. Reportedly, he once chased her with a knife when she was pregnant.
Mette-Marit raised Marius in a working-class area, which was surrounded by people with criminal backgrounds, including his father.
After Marius was born, Mette-Marit shifted to Kristiansand and lived with a DJ until they split in 1999.
In 1999, she met Crown Prince Haakon, and in 2000, she moved to Oslo from Kristiansand to live with him.
After that, people found it controversial that Mette-Marit was a single mother, especially since Marius’s father was a convicted criminal.

A television channel, TV2, reported that just being born made Marius a ‘scandal’ for Norway’s royal family.
Princess Ragnhild once said in a documentary that once the royal couple had a child together, Marius might feel left out, and it could cause problems.
When Haakon and Mette-Marit became a couple, the media began calling Marius ‘Little Marius,’ a nickname that came from a novel character who, like Marius, was born outside marriage and felt like an outsider.

Marius’s grandfather, Sven O. Høiby, often spoke publicly that Marius should be made a prince to avoid being bullied or feeling left out.
Marius finished high school in 2016.
In 2017, he started studying business in California but dropped out within a few months.
In 2017, Marius Høiby was sentenced for possessing drugs.
He returned to Norway in late 2017 and worked with fashion designer Philipp Plein for some time.
He then worked as a style editor at Tempus magazine in the UK until it shut down in December 2018.

In 2019, he moved back from the UK to Norway and lived in Tønsberg with his girlfriend Juliane Snekkestad.
In 2022, after they broke up, he moved into one of the homes at Skaugum, where the Crown Prince and Princess lived.
Without having a royal title or official role, he often attended royal events like state dinners and Constitution Day celebrations.

From 2023 to 2024, he frequently shared videos of reckless driving and partying, often with influencers, criminals, and drug users on social media.
The victim, his ex-girlfriend from Frogner, Oslo, accused him of physically assaulting her in two separate incidents.
He was arrested on 13 September 2024 for violating a restraining order by calling her. He was released the next day.
During one arrest, a blood test showed use of cocaine, ecstasy, and cannabis.
During investigations, some audio recordings were released where Høiby was heard talking about hitting her.
He was charged with making threats against her on 23 August 2024.
He was also charged with violence against another former girlfriend.
He faced multiple rape/sexual assault charges which involved three different women, all in their 20s.
In August 2024, after his arrest, Høiby told Se og Hør that he had hurt someone and broken things in a Frogner apartment while drunk and high on cocaine after an argument.
He added that he had a long history of addiction to alcohol and drugs. He said that his drug use and health diagnoses were not an excuse and did not remove his responsibility for what happened.
After that, a man accused Høiby of a death threat. He claimed that Høiby had messaged him and called him a ‘fucking dead man.’
Reportedly, the investigation authorities informed the Royal Court in advance about Marius Høiby’s arrest.
The Crown Princess reportedly warned her son and personally drove him to meet the police. It led to accusations of preferential treatment, evidence tampering, and witness tampering.
The media questioned whether royal funds were used to support Høiby’s drug use and lifestyle. It was claimed that he received 20,000 kroner monthly and had his bills paid by the Crown Prince and Princess.
Many critics and royal commentators spoke that Marius had damaged the royal family’s image. Some called him “a catastrophe” and “the psycho who brings down the royal family.”
In August 2024, after his arrest, Høiby issued a public apology and expressed guilt, blaming his actions on alcohol, cocaine, and mental illness.
On 19 November 2024, he was accused of new charges, including abuse in close relationships, violating a restraining order, and driving without a license.
By 25 November 2024, police began investigating a second rape accusation, made after his release.
Høiby reportedly hosted drug-fueled parties at Skaugum, a royal residence. He used to invite his criminal friends, including Hells Angels gang members. Some rapes reportedly happened there.
His mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, reportedly welcomed these guests, and the events were known as ‘Skaugum festivals.’
A politician claimed that Høiby had close ties with criminals involved in drugs, money laundering, and violence, and these people were freely allowed on royal property.
In December 2024, Marius Borg Høiby went to a drug rehabilitation.
In June 2025, charges involving one former girlfriend were dropped. She accused him of physical abuse for more than four years.
According to some media reports, the Crown Prince was informed of abuse allegations by the victim’s family, but he did not take action.
On 27 June 2025, Høiby was accused of 23 crimes, including 3 rapes, assault, and sexual offences, involving 15-20 women. All these charges were formally filed.
