- Misterio was initially interested in boxing but after his body got bigger, he took a lot of bumps and lost some of his punching ability. When his trainers told him that he could not still punch hard, they told Misterio about wrestling.
- Misterio gained fame in the lucha libre scene in Mexico, earning championship titles with prominent organisations such as the World Wrestling Association and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, equivalent to Mexico’s WWE.

- Rey Misterio Sr once captured the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship and teamed up with Rey Mysterio Jr. to win the WWA Tag Team Championship.
- Misterio appeared in the horror film El Mascarado Massacre (or Wrestlemaniac), released in 2006.
- Despite taking retirement from wrestling in 2009, Misterio came back in the ring once again in April 2023 where he defeated Hereje, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, and Nightmare Azteca at a Global Lucha Libre event with the help of Aero Star and Mr. Iguana.
