Satya Nadella’s paternal grandfather had migrated to Bukkapuram from Nadella village in Guntur district (present-day Palnadu district) of Andhra Pradesh.

Satya got married to Anupama Priyadarshini in 1992 and Anupama was Satya’s father’s Indian Administrative Service (IAS) batchmate’s daughter.

His wife was his junior at Manipal Institute of Technology and she was pursuing a B.Arch in the Faculty of Architecture at that time.

In 1992, Satya started working as an engineer in the American multinational technology conglomerate named ‘Microsoft.’

Before joining ‘Microsoft,’ Satya used to work as a member of the technology staff of an American technology company named ‘Sun Microsystems Incorporation.’

In 2007, Satya started working as the senior vice-president of research and development (R&D) for the Online Services Division and vice-president of the Microsoft Business Division.

In 2013, Satya Nadella’s base salary was reportedly $669,167. Including his stock bonuses, his total compensation was noted to be around $7.6 million.

Before becoming CEO, he was the executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise group and was responsible for building and running the company’s computing platforms.

In 2014, Satya Nadella’s first acquisition with Microsoft was the Swedish game company named ‘Mojang’ which was acquired for $2.5 billion.

Initially, at Microsoft, he led some of the major projects of the company and one of them was the company’s move to cloud computing and the development of one of the largest cloud infrastructures in the world.

In 2016, Satya Nadella became one of the Board Members of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in America.

In 2017, he became the board member of an American multinational chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves named ‘Starbucks Corporation.’

In 2018, Satya became a Member Board of Trustees of the American Private research university named ‘The University of Chicago.’

In 2021, Satya Nadella started working as the Chairman of ‘The Business Council’ which is an association of the Chief Executive Officers of the world’s most important business enterprises.

Satya had a son named Zain who was a legally blind quadriplegic with cerebral palsy. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 26.

Both Satya Nadella and his wife Anupama are part of the ownership group of ‘Seattle Sounders FC’ which is a Major League Soccer club.

Satya Nadella has been named as one of the main helping hands for Microsoft’s database, Windows Server and developer tools to its Azure cloud.

In 2023, he along with other businessmen including Soma Somasegar, Samir Bodas, Ashok Krishnamurthi, Sanjay Parthasarathy, and the GMR Group purchased the Seattle Orcas cricket team which was a part of the 2023 Major League Cricket season.

In 2024, Satya Nadella’s compensation from Microsoft was totalled at $79.1 million which was at an increase of 63% over his 2023 compensation of $48.5 million.

At one point in his career, Satya had decided to quit his job at Microsoft and surrendered his US green card and decided to move back to India because his wife Anu was not able to join him in Seattle. He later applied for an H1-B visa and was quoted saying in his book that

Well, the H1-B enables spouses to come to the US while their husbands and wives are working here. Such is the perverse logic of this immigration law. There was nothing I could do about it. Anu was my priority. And that made my decision a simple one.”
