Some Lesser Known Facts About Ujjwal Nikam

• Since childhood, he saw his father’s journey from a Lawyer to a Judge. But, he never wanted to come into the legal profession. His mother wanted him to be a doctor and his father wanted him to become an Advocate. With time, he got so influenced by his father’s job that he decided to do the same.

• After completing his law degree, he started his career as a District Government Public Prosecutor of Jalgaon.

• On 12 March 1983 Mumbai bomb blast, the Mumbai police invited him to Mumbai in 1994. He was appointed as an SPP (Special Public Prosecutor) for the case. This was a great turning point in his career, he came into the limelight after this case.

  

• In December 2010, he represented the Indian Government at an international convention on terrorism held in New York.

• In 2016, he received the Padma Shri from the former President Pranab Mukherjee and became the first Public Prosecutor throughout the country to achieve this honour.

  

• A Marathi film titled ‘Aadesh – Power of Law’ based on Ujjwal Nikam’s life was released on 6 October 2017.

• He considers his father as his role model. In an interview, he stated,
  

  “He was very honest, straightforward and much disciplined person and I respect him a lot.”

• He has handled numerous cases and has served as a Public Prosecutor for several important cases at both state and national level. In his 35 years of career, he has secured almost 628 life imprisonments and around 37 death penalties.

• He has been provided with Z Plus Security Cover since 2009 by the Indian Government due to his involvement in high-profile cases.

• He charges ₹10 thousand for one hearing, whereas, the criminal lawyers of his calibre charge ₹5 lakh per hearing.
