• Sujoy Ghosh is an Indian director, screenplay writer, and actor who has directed many Bollywood films. He is known for portraying offbeat topics in the films.

• When he was 13, he moved to London, where he completed his formal education following which he worked as Head of the South Asia division of Reuters from 1993 to 2000.

• Before he made his entry into Bollywood, he took many odd jobs such as a math tutor, store attendant, and waiter. His first film Jhankaar Beats, starring Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri in the main roles, became a massive hit.

  

• He formed his own production house in 2005 and named it Boundscript Motion Pictures Private Limited.

• His debut production film ‘Aladin’ (based on the famous story of Aladin) starring Amitabh Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, and Jacqueline Fernandez could not win critics and public acclaim.

  

• In 2012, his film ‘Kahaani,’ a mystery thriller starring Vidya Balan, Indraneil Sengupta, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Parambrata Chatterjee, and Saswata Chatterjee received huge commercial and critical acclaim; winning three National Awards including Best Screenplay (Original) Award.

  

• He later directed, produced, and wrote the screenplay for several films including Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh in 2016, Badla in 2019, Bob Biswas in 2021, and Jaane Jaan in 2023.

  

• In 2015, his short film, Ahalya starring Radhika Apte, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Tata Roy also received critical acclaim. The film’s storyline is based on the mythical story of the character Ahalya from Ramayana. In 2017, he made another short film Anukul.

  

• He has also played a small acting role in ‘My Brother Nikhil’ and ‘Bluffmaster’ in 2005, and ‘Tara Rum Pum’ in 2007.

• Reportedly, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry removed two films named S Durga and Nude from the selected list of films of the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 2017 following which Sujoy resigned from the post of Jury Chief of IFFI. ^[1]NDTV

• Sujoy often follows different creative methods to promote his films. To promote his film Badla in 2019, he and Taapsee Pannu, who featured in the film, became a commentator during an IPL match and did commentary in Bengali on the Star Jalsa channel.

  

• During his childhood, he used to read books by Swapan Kumar, Nihar Ranjan Gupta, Hemendra Kumar Roy, Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Buddhadeb Guha, Sunil Ganguly, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

• Sujoy talked about his maternal grandfather in an interview and revealed that his grandfather was a Nepali, and after being named as a murder accused, he came to Kolkata. His maternal grandfather later became a rich man’s chauffeur and ran away with the daughter of another rich man.

  

• He talked about his financial condition in an interview and revealed that he had a salary of Rs 50 lakhs while working at Reuters in 1999.

• Sujoy Ghosh has a unique style of film direction. Bollywood stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vijay Varma, and Jaideep Ahlawat said in an interview that before shooting emotional scenes, Sujoy would sing funny songs, and instead of looking at the monitor while shooting, he would keep looking at the actors enacting the scene.

  

• He is a die hard fan of Amitabh Bachchan. He disclosed his earliest memory of Bachchan in an interview which was watching the film Namak Haram with his father and being impressed with Bachchan’s dialogues, particularly ‘Hai koi maai ka laal jo maa ka doodh piya ho.’

  

• He said in an interview that he would like to make a film based on the popular story of Kabuliwala.

• In an interview, Sujoy said that every job was equal in his eyes, and had he not been a filmmaker, he would have done any work, even that of a taxi driver.

• He has written the tagline “Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re” for the IPL Team Kolkata Knight Riders.
