In 1962, he joined India’s National Defence Academy but left after a polo accident caused partial hearing loss.
After that, he worked on a Scottish tea plantation in Darjeeling for more than four years.
By 1970, he started a garment manufacturing business near Delhi.
I came to America in 1975 to sell my wares… I liked it here, asked for immigration.”
He then added how he travelled for work, went to Canada, and bought his first property. He said,
I saw the returns looked good… since then I have been in real estate, which gives me time to travel.”
Arvinder Singh Bahal became a US citizen in 1979 after getting a Green Card in 1977.
He has been to both the North Pole and the South Pole.
He has gone skydiving over Mount Everest and the Pyramids of Giza.
Arvinder Singh Bahal has a private pilot’s license and can also fly helicopters.
He is fluent in six languages.
His travels include remote places like Greenland, Patagonia, North Korea, and big deserts such as the Sahara.
His photography has been featured in media around the world.
In a 2017 interview with an online radio channel, Arvinder Singh Bahal shared about his travels. He said that his favourite places were India, where he was born, and China.
He reportedly has a collection of over one million photographs.
He wrote a book about his travels called The Tireless Traveller.
One of his Instagram posts showed his visits to Sikh shrines in Pakistan, including Gurdwara Panja Sahib, connected to Guru Nanak Dev in 2024. Another Instagram post featured videos of the Sagsai Eagle Festival in Mongolia.
In August 2025, Arvinder Singh Bahal gained attention when it was announced that he would fly to space with Jeff Bezos‘ Blue Origin.
The mission, called NS-34, launched from West Texas on 3 August 2025.
During this mission, at 79 years old, he was one of the few civilians of Indian origin to travel past the Karman line, the official boundary of space.
The flight was part of Blue Origin’s New Shepard space tourism program, which had already flown 70 people by August 2025.
The NS-34 mission included a diverse group of crew members from different countries.
Other crew members were tech entrepreneur Justin Sun, Turkish businessman Gokhan Erdem, Puerto Rican meteorologist Deborah Martorell, British teacher Lionel Pitchford, and venture capitalist JD Russell.
