• Canaan James Hill was raised in a middle-class family in a small town in Dallas, Texas.

• Canaan started singing in church at a young age, around 6 years old. He also describes himself as a “churchy kid.’

• He grew up surrounded by music, drawing inspiration from a variety of genres, including classic rock and modern pop. Both of his parents were musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion. As a result, Canaan learned to play several instruments, including the guitar and piano, which deepened his love for music.

• In an interview, Hill revealed that he participated in many talent shows and acted on stage. He joined the choir and played saxophone in his high school band.

• Canaan never had any formal vocal music training, and church was his music school. In an interview, he said

“I didn’t know if I was going to be a great singer, so preaching was my thing, which it still is.”

• James sings gospel music (African-American Christian music) in the church and on other occasions. He got the inspiration for gospel singing from his grandfather, who is also a gospel singer.
