Some Lesser Known Facts About Mathura Sridharan

• In May 2023, Mathura Sridharan started working as the director of Ohio’s Tenth Amendment Centre at the Ohio Solicitor’s Office.

• During this period, she fought legal cases to protect Ohio people from illegal actions by the federal government. She worked to assign the roles of the federal government and the state governments.

• Mathura Sridharan wrote legal documents and spoke in court for many appeals. She also argued cases in the Ohio Supreme Court, the United States Supreme Court, the Sixth Circuit and other federal appeal courts.

• In 2023, Mathura worked in the United States Supreme Court for a case called Ohio v. EPA. She represented several states against a rule made by the Environmental Protection Agency about air pollution between states.

• Before working at the Ohio Solicitor’s Office, Mathura Sridharan worked as a clerk for Judge Steven J Menashi in the Second Circuit Appeals Court.

• She has also worked as a clerk for Judge Deborah A Batts in the Southern District Court of New York.

• In August 2025, Mathura Sridharan came into the limelight when she created history after she was chosen as Ohio’s 12th Solicitor General.

• After that, she became the top lawyer for Ohio in key appeal cases in both federal and state courts, including the US Supreme Court.

• Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced her new role. He praised her skills and work, especially her argument in the Ohio v. EPA case at the US Supreme Court in 2023.

• In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Dave Yost called Mathura Sridharan brilliant and said that she would do a great job for the state. Yost said,

  Mathura is brilliant… she won her argument at SCOTUS last year. Both the SGs she worked under (Flowers & Gaiser) recommended her. I told her when I originally hired her I needed her to argue with me. She does… All the time! Excited to promote her. She will serve Ohio well.”

• Soon after her appointment, many people online made racist and hateful comments about her. Some people doubted whether she was American. She was criticised for wearing a bindi on her forehead.

  

• Some people did not like that someone with an Indian background got such an important legal job in America. Many rude and racist remarks were asking why the job did not go to an ‘American.’

• After people criticised Mathura Sridharan for being Indian and wearing a bindi, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost defended her. Yost said in a media conversation that saying Mathura was not American was wrong.

• Yost added that if someone had a problem with the way she looked or her name, the problem was with that person, not with her. Dave Yost said,

  A few commenters have asserted incorrectly that Mathura is not American. She is a United States citizen, married to a US citizen, and the child of naturalized US citizens. If her name or her complexion bother you, the problem is not with her or her appointment.

• Mathura Sridharan is trained in Carnatic music. She has performed at many music gatherings called sabhas. She took part in Chennai’s December music season in 2010.

• She likes travelling to distant places and cooking food in her free time.
