Some Lesser Known Facts About Shekhar Suman

• Shekhar Suman used to be the favourite child of his parents.

  

• While growing up he joined the organisation named Jai Prakash Narayan’s Charkha Samiti. He used to sleep there after having snacks and sweets.

• In childhood, he loved to fly kites and play with marbles with his friends.

• While in school, he used to participate in debate competitions and stage plays. He used to mimic various actors like Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, and Dilip Kumar in front of his school friends.

• He also joined NCC while he was in school. He then decided to join the Indian Navy.

• While he was in college, he wanted to become an IAS officer. However, he was inclined towards acting after he joined Shri Ram Centre as a repertory actor. He used to earn Rs 625 per month there.

• While he was in college, he started dating Alka Kapur, a student at IP College. Later, they got married.

• After their marriage, their son Aayush was born. However, due to illness, he could not survive. Shekhar was in depression after that and even stopped believing in god.

• In 1984, he made his debut with the Hindi film Utsav in which he was required to do some bold scenes with the Indian actress Rekha. He was so nervous that he practised with a pillow before shooting the scenes with Rekha.

• In an interview, he shared how he got the offer of the film Utsav. He said that he met the Indian actor Shashi Kapoor on the sets of a film. Shashi advised him to meet the film director Girish Karnad who selected him for the role.

• After the release of his debut film Utsav, he signed around 30 films; half of which were never released.

• Shekhar has appeared in many Hindi films including Sansar (1987), Tere Bina Kya Jeena (1989), Ranbhoomi (1991), and Chor Machaaye Shor (2002).

  

• He has acted in various Hindi TV serials like Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993), Ek Raja Ek Rani (1996), Vilayati Babu (1998), Hera Pheri (1999), and Saat Pheron Ki Hera Pherie (2018).

• He gained immense popularity for hosting the 1997 Hindi TV talk show Movers & Shakers which aired on Sony TV. Initially, the makers of the TV show decided to air it for a week. However, when the show gained popularity, the show was extended.

  

• He has hosted a few Hindi reality TV shows like Made in India (2000), Neelam Ghar (2002), He Man (2004), and Poll Khol (2004).

  

• He has also judged a few popular TV shows like The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (2005), Comedy Circus – Kaante Ki Takkar (2008), Laugh India Laugh (2012), Comedy Superstar (2015), and India’s Laughter Champion (2022).

  

• He worked as a producer in the 2006 Hindi film ‘Moonlight: Unfortunately a Love Story.’

• In 2007, on his birthday, he quit smoking as he was a chain smoker. However, he restarted it as he believed it was a stress buster for him. Later, in 2022, in one of his tweets, he wrote that he did not smoke or drink alcohol.

  

• In 2009, he appeared in the reality TV show ‘Raaz Pichhle Janam Ka.’

  

• He participated in the 2010 reality dance TV show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

  

• He regularly works out at a gym to remain fit.

  

• In 2014, even after being associated with the Congress party, he supported Narendra Modi, a Prime Minister candidate at that time.

• In 2014, he directed the Hindi film ‘Heartless’ in the memory of his son Aayush.

• Shekhar, along with his son, has been featured on the cover of various magazines like Mayapuri and Tycoon Global.

  

• He is considered the first Indian TV artist to receive Rs 1 lakh per episode.

• He is trained in Indian classical music.

• He once shared that he loved to cook food, which was a stress-buster for him.

• In 2021, he warned a few news channels to take strict against them for broadcasting fake news of his son Adhyayan Suman’s death.
